I had never heard of this game before reading an article about it today. It seems really brutal, but still pretty dang sweet nonetheless.
Calcio Storico is an early form of football that originated in 16th century Italy. The game may have started as a revival of the Roman sport of harpastum. The actual game its self is played in teams of 27, using both feet and hands. While things like sucker-punches and kicks to the head are prohibited, headbutting, punching, elbowing, and choking are all allowed.
Matches last 50 minutes and are played on a field covered in sand, doubly long as it is wide. A white line divides the field in two identical squares, and a goal net runs the width of each end.
Each team has 27 players with no expected substitutes. There are: four Datori Indietro (goalkeepers), 3 Datori Innanzi (fullbacks), 5 Sconciatori (halfbacks), 15 Innanzi o Corridori (forwards). The Capitan and Alfiere (flagbears) tent sits in the center of the goal net. They dont actively participate in the game, but can referee and organize the game.
Here is a couple of youtube videos that has some highlights of matches, plus a few links to read more into how the game is played.

What's everyone think about this game? Pretty neat, huh? The players straight up throw down and brawl in these games. Has anyone ever honestly heard of this sport before? Too bad it isn't played in the USA as far as I know. This is something I'd like to check out in person at least once just to see what it's all about.
