I've checked out just about every pre-season mag under the sun. Be it lindys, sporting news, football time or athlon... ive read them all. And California to me is 100% without a doubt dangerous. According to these mags they have a top 5 defense and two all conference corners...one of which is an all american. Daymeion Hughes is an all american CB and one of the top 5 in the nation. Linebackers are the least to worry about but still talented. The DL looks brutal and boasts possibly the number one DT in the nation in Brandon Mebane. Pre-season heisman candidate Marshawn Lynch at RB who had ove 1200 yard...and justin forsett had around 1000. DeSean Jackson and Robert Jordan are two all conference WR as well. This team looks incredibly dangerous and potentially one of the best teams we play.

You're right...and if we are going to be completely honest, one of the reasons some people don't take California seriously is that they aren't in the SEC and therefore couldn't be that good. While I do believe the SEC is the best conference, I have also noticed a little arrogance when it comes to playing other teams in other conferences. We had better take this one VERY seriously!

How many good teams have they beaten in the last three years? They're a paper tiger. If UT's remotely decent they will expose the Bears for the frauds they are.

Cal Scares me to death. I really do beleive that if we dont play our best game against them they will put a hurting on us.

I really want to be proven wrong on this one. :(

dont underestimate CAL they very well could be the best team we will play the whole year. Marshaun Lynch is amazing and could be the second best RB in the nation.

If you look at it from the perspective of their strengths and our weaknesses yes they could come into Neyland and win big. But if you look at the other side I'd bet they're doing the same thing. If I were a Cal fan I might say...Going into a long road trip to one of the biggest stadiums in the country, facing a team that plays on emotion loaded with athletes, who have a chip on their shoulder about last season. They've closed practices and a new O coordinator so we wont know what they're gonna do till we see it. Tennessee is a very dangerous team, and it appears we may be the sacrificial lamb with a good pre season ranking for the Vols to reload their reputation on. We'll be the favorite on the road, all the pressure is on us.

While I think Cal (and almost any other team) is dangerous, I still think they are overrated. They DID NOT BEAT a single team with a winning record last year. I know that is not a sure fire reflection on what they might do this year but it still remains that they did little last year.

i think their RB's took advantage of a very weak conference in the terms of defense. they are good backs but in the sec they would not be getting this much hype.

Cal is a good team but is highly improbable that they have one of the top 5 defenses in the country.

He is already setting the stage for his "Fulmer's ___ wins this season weren't impressive "because"........................ arguements.

Cal can't be good, or Tennessee beating them would be something he would HAVE to give Fulmer credit for. Stay tuned, he's gonna comical to watch as the season goes on.

why do you guys believe Cal is nothing? Because they are Pac 10? They are stacked at almost all the positions. They're new QB is above average and they have a good line, the rest of the team is outstanding. Don't say that macho SEC stuff they are a great team, who can beat just about every team in our conference.

most of u base your oppinions of cal's players on stats. its not that difficult to put up big numbers on pac 10 defenses. thats a fact.

Macho SEC stuff???? Saying Cal might be a pretty good team is one thing. But don't tell me that a team that won 8 games last year and whose biggest win came against BYU can beat everybody in the SEC. Saying that is just as crazy as dismissing them just because they are in the Pac-10.

Yeah, Cal could concievably beat everybody in the SEC, on a game-by-game basis. Don't get ahead of yourself. Cal is a complete wildcard next year, to be honest. They have the goods to compete for a national title, but do they have the testicular fortitude after a dissapointing season.

I think Cal Might be overrated, but it's about personnel and matchups in the preseason, and on paper, i have no reason to dispute why Cal should be dangerous coming in to Neyland next year. Cal's defense, if you believe what you read, will be better than advertised. the offense should be good anyway with Lynch and CJT.

But i tend to think like Dan4vols does....we are just as scary a game for them as they are for us...no one really knows how either team is going to come together.

But, about Cal's Offense, they didn't play a D last year that was anything like the D you see in the SEC...on the flip side, it could be said that TN didn't see an offense anything like Cal's either...

Should be an interesting game to say the least. I still like our chances. they got to make the long trip, lose three hours, step in to 90 degree 80% humidity and play. While i wouldn't be shocked if Cal won, it is not expected. I expect TN to pound on them a little and wear 'em out in the 2nd half and win by 10+. something like 24-13.

After last year, every team scares me to death. We CAN"T EVER forget that the Commode Doors beat us last year. It surely can't be any worse than that. :disappointed:

Hopefully, last year was an eye-opener for the boys in ORANGE. Maybe, by now they know that superstar ability doesn't automatically lead to superstar performance especially if you leave off superstar effort and superstar execution. I don't care how the "News" boys rate you, you still have to execute and prove to be slobber-knockers if you want to win.

GO BIG ORANGE, POUND THE ROCK AND RUN TO VICTORY !!!!!!!!

We should definitely look out for Cal. They are also a tad overrated, but could easily win 10 games.

Their total defense was ranked 46th last season, which isn't awful, but not great. HOWEVER, there scoring defense ranked 26th, which is pretty darn good. The scary part is that their defense is only going to get better. They return 7 starters from last season. They only start ONE player younger than a junior, but even HE started last season as a freshman.

Their CBs are both seniors, so they'll be tough to beat. Their defensive question marks are their two safety spots, but both guys are juniors.

About their offense ... Lynch isn't their only back. Forsett is great as well, and those 2 combined for 2200 on the 9th best running attack in the nation. Their Oline is their biggest concern, as it only returns 1 starter. 2 Sophomores start on the OLine, one is 6'5" 295 and the other is 6'6" 334. A concern for the Bears, but it seems there is some size there.

If Cal continues the trend of losing 1 game a year due to special teams, it could be the Tennessee game.

At a neutral site, I think this is a 50/50 game. With a home team, they have the advantage 60/40, which isn't overwhelming.
