Leverage. If Memphis will up his salary to a figure close to what the Pack is offering, he'll stay.

NCS offered 2.2 million to Barnes. Wonder if they'll make Cal the same offer and if so, can Memphis match that?

Memphis would not be able to match that figure.

What if Scott Edgar got the Memphis job?
While he has good recruiting connections in the area, I think Memphis would look to somone who is currently a head coach. Ricardo Patton at Colorado has strong ties to the Bluff City. Also, don't count Nolan Richardson out. That would be a perfect match. Memphis would replace one high profile coach with another and Nolan would get a chance to stick it to Arkansas in recruiting.

Yup..you knew it was definitely for leverage..afterall he's built some good teams in weaker conferences,(A10 and CUSA) but the guy didn't want to to fail when he had to play in a power conference against Dook and UNC.

I am guessing there will be a reply/rebuttal to you NC Gator.

No problem..just stating the facts and what he said!

John Calipari was on the brink of accepting the North Carolina State job Monday night.

His eventual change of mind was not because of compensation concerns, however. Rather, he was concerned he wouldn't have enough of a shot at doing what Wolfpack officials want: consistently beating Duke and North Carolina.

I'm certain Cal would have loved to play Carolina this year. I know he loved blasting them out of the Preseason NIT in 1994.

He couldn't handle Dook on a neutral court! He needs to stick to the small time conferences so he can beat up on them. :devilsmoke:

The fact that Coach Cal stayed has been so all over the Memphis news. I think they are trying to cover up the Logan Young story with that bit of sports news. But, honestly, with the new FedEx forum and the kids, why leave?

Gee, a Carolina guy resorting to using Duke as a reference when NC can't get it done. I won't even stress the point about Saint Dean refusing to play UMASS home and home, despite numerous requests by Cal. I guess that loss in MSG taught the old man a lesson.

No animosity at all...we all like different coaches, teams, etc...when you start taking it personally is when you dont need to post on message boards. I like to hear 96's take on college hoops..something we both love...he likes Calapari...and I just think he's a big fish in a small pond! :peace2:
