Thought I would pass this on to everyone, this was in my local paper.
Has this happened to anyone?

“One-ring” cell phone scam can ding your wallet

Who’s calling now? That number doesn’t ring a bell. Hold the phone, says the Federal Trade Commission. You could be a potential victim of the growing "one-ring” cell phone scam.

Here’s how it works: Scammers are using auto-dialers to call cell phone numbers across the country. Scammers let the phone ring once — just enough for a missed call message to pop up.

The scammers hope you’ll call back, either because you believe a legitimate call was cut off, or you will be curious about who called. If you do, chances are you’ll hear something like, “Hello. You’ve reached the operator, please hold.” All the while, you’re getting slammed with some hefty charges, $9 per-minute charge on top of a $19.95 international rate. The calls are from phone numbers with three-digit area codes that look like they’re from inside the U.S., but actually are associated with international phone numbers — often in the Caribbean. The area codes include: 268, 284, 473, 664, 649, 767, 809, 829, 849 and 876.

If you get a call like this, don’t pick it up and don’t call the number back. There’s no danger in getting the call: the danger is in calling back and racking up a whopping bill.

If you're tempted to call back, do yourself a favor and check the number through online directories first. They can tell you where the phone number is registered.

a missed call from an unknown number without a voicemail isn't getting a return call.

Good, I am like you even if I am curious.
I know I have called numbers and not left a message and people have called me back, wondering who I was and what I wanted. I figured it was more common.

Like others if I don't know your # you'd best leave a message. I have had 3 calls fairly recently that match that description; one from Idaho, one from Chicago and another from Minnesota.

I'll always look it up on Google first. Usually can provide a pretty good answer. It's difficult for me because I have reasons that the pretty much anyone from my entire battalion I'm in might call me.

I google it too. I got a call from one of these numbers. Googled it and found out about the scam.

same here. The one I got had an Antigua and Barboda #.

Ive been getting those too. I never answer from those areas. Then I block the number for future calls.

Sometimes I answer ones that are identified in the US. Its generally some debt consolidator from "members services". If I have a few minutes I mess with them until they get frustrated and hang up on me. Then I block their #.

My iPhone gives me city and state for all calls. I check it but I do have calls from all over the country so I'm calling people back a lot.
