I have never kept up with our baseball team, and since we seem to have hit a "home-run" hire with CDS, I'm going to start. Can we expect to be competitive next year? I mean will we make the SEC Tournament and compete with UF, SC, and Vandy. :hi:

We have a good class coming in. Pitching will be a weak point. We will compete by the upgrade in coaching. SEC is a powerhouse in baseball. I say we can compete for the 6th, 7th and 8th spot to go to hoover.

Make the SEC Tournament- Yes. The next goal will be a little harder. after all we're talking about 3 of the final 4 teams in the CWS. I believe we can, but not in one year.JMO

Due to the strength of the SEC, I would venture to say if UT makes the SEC tournament, we will make a Regional (Assuming we are at least 1 game over .500).

That's a reasonable goal, but to be above .500, we'll need to win a lot of non-conference games.

Our pitching depth will cost us some mid-week games next year. Mark it down.

I agree with most everything said so far. The truth is that the team we fielded w/ Raleigh didn't look completely out manned against SC this year, UF is another story. However we lost a lot of production due to graduation and the draft. Pitching was the real weakness this season. That's the bad news. The good news is pitching is Serrano's thing, so if we have any talent at all, he'll be able to improve it. Offensively we'll be much more aggressive especially base running. In the end, if we can move from last to 8th or better, that would be a really successful season imo. Really looking forward to this season. GBO!

It will be hard to be any more aggressive on the base paths than we were this year. It will be interesting to see who shines with TR's black cloud lifted.

Did you get a chance to watch any CSF games. Now, you know a lot more than I, but it seemed borderline crazy, some of the stuff I saw, like in the regionals. And when the other team got a runner on, it was like the guy said something about Serrano's mom, they'd go all out trying to prevent him getting to second. In fact I recall the commentators saying that the pitcher should take a little off his throws over to first and wondered if Serrano was counting those as part of the pitch count lol.

They didn't look as sharp, or smooth as say a team like SC.

Granted I only saw a handful of games, same with Tennessee too, as I usually just listen to the radio.

I didn't watch any CSF games this year but I do like CDS's style of play. If they make it to Hoover next year(which almost guarantees a regional), it will be a miraculously quick turnaround.

I agree...I think 14-16 got teams to Hoover this year, which means we'd have to double our wins from this year, pretty tough.

CSF was down a little this year. They were reloading for another 2 year run. Baseball runs in 2-3 year cycles. When you are hot with talent the pro scouts are nipping at your heals to draft your talent away. So you end up with one strong talent year, one good talent year and then a full reload.

CDS is a great pitching coach. He will take the talent we have plus what he gets coming in and will improve them a great deal. It will take two recruiting classes starting with next year to get the hot talent they need to compete with the top SEC teams. USC will drop down a notch next year due to graduations and the draft. Vandy may as well since they had 13 players drafted.

UT will make the SEC tourney IMO. Somewhere between 5th to 7th probably. Beyond that we will need some breaks to get in the NCAA. Could happen if they take to the coaching they are going to get.

I'd think they'll make the SEC tourney which is a start at least

We will be better coached. We will not make the SEC tournament and will struggle with virtually everyone that we play. The talent is not SEC caliber. Think if you threw Carson Newman into the SEC in football, I don't care who your new coach is, he doesn't carry pixie dust to sprinkle on the existing players and magically transform them.

These guys will need at least two classes to even get into the conversation. After one recruiting class they will be much improved, after two classes that will be dramatically improved, after three classes they should be able to play with anybody.

This.

Tennessee will only make the SEC tourny if other teams are down- CDS needs some time to recruit.

Serrano has been called a master of seeing what you are doing wrong and showing players (esp. pitchers) things they can pick up easily. I read some about him being one of the best at spotting weaknesses that can be corrected-and putting it in terms players can implement. Some people have a knack for that. His players have always said they thought they improved a lot with his coaching. Not unlike a talented golf swing coach.

I'm hoping he can help some players we already think we know a lot about into better players.

I assume that it is too late to add any additional quality players for next year that were not already signed?

These new coaches like to play small ball, and I predict we lead the SEC in sacrifices this year

I'd give Serrano a bit of time. Like many others have said, I think we can make an SEC tourny, but with suspect pitching you never can tell. He needs time to recruit.
