Where are you supposed to go when you're already headed towards the ground? He curled his neck as far into his chest as he could, but you know, his head was still attached to it.

I hate the targeting rule the way it is.

That’s why it was targeting, he ducked his head and hit the receiver in the head. If he had not curled his head as you said they would not have called it.

You do understand why it’s a rule. It’s not just to protect players it’s to keep the NCAA from being sued for head injuries.

It’s a trend that’s only going to get bigger IMO. Think it will eventually force college football into making a postseason playoff with many teams in order to keep top players in because they would actually be playing for something.

I just think it's funny people seem to be getting upset about it, when coaches have been doing it forever.

Crown of the helmet is a no no. If he had kept his head up and went in with the face mask he's good. But then it should have still been a late hit considering the guy was already on the ground.

It's definitely going to be growing each year. A guy like Grier playing in the bowl tonight isn't getting anything more or less than a QB playing in a playoff game. Nothing's going to stop a player from sitting it out no matter what game it is in years to come.

Holy crap VG if there was ever gonna be a poster / educational video on what not to do this was it. Are you questioning what the defender could have done?
1) It was a borderline late hit. Offensive player was already on ground rolling over
2) Defender led with crown of his helmet (squatting down to get lower to spear) and he was virtually standing still when he did it
3) He contacted the Offensive player in the helmet AND neck area intentionally.
What do you hate about that call or targeting rule the way it is? This was as cut and dried as I could possibly see.

Yes, I understand. But it's football. Your head (and helmet) is always gonna be above your shoulders. And there are gonna be times when your head and helmet are gonna contact the guy with the ball because of where you both are.

I just don't think it was malicious. I think it was football.

I guess just saw it differently. Good thing I'm not a ref huh. 😁

For the record, I'm pulling for Syracuse.

No problem and sorry if that came off wrong. I just would use that play to show players I coached what not to do and why. It checked all the boxes. My son and I talk all the time about targeting he hates the rule but is only a few years removed from playing and I try to explain why its needed. I do think we will see some version of the old facemask rule (when we had a 5 yard inadvertent and a 15 yd flagrant) with a 15 yard targeting without meaning to ( fast play, offensive player sliding late, etc) and the 15 yard and tossed out version.

Bull. He could have easily went over the top. Targeting, plain and simple.
