Updated Recruiting Board

There are two categories of players this year out of state: You got the top 100 guys, and then the Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana leftovers. Fact is, however bad it might sound, getting the secondary talent from Louisiana and Georgia is going to be every important to this years class. Both Georgia and LSU have limited scholarships for this year’s class, and being able to get the number 9 or so player in Louisiana could be a very real possibility this year. The top 100 type guys are not going to come in bunches from those states or Florida. It’s hard to tell with these guys, cause they have so many offers early but I will throw out some names. Also it seems as if we are starting to make some moves in state. We are starting to offer more kids, especially out of Brentwood. It appears to me like Fulmer is trying to get some early commitments in state, and I would not be surprised to see some. Here is Brent’s early scholarship breakdown form the war room:
1 - quarterback 1-2 - running back 2-3 - wide receiver 4-5 - defensive end/defensive tackle 4-5 - offensive linemen 3-4 - defensive backs 3-4 - linebackers 1 - punter/place-kicker.
Quarterback:
Work To Do: Aaron Murray (Florida): Still very early in his recruitment, but he claims 37 offers. Little short, but good mobility and has an unbelievable arm. Puts up numbers at Plant High School (Miami QB Robert Marve) in Florida that are just silly. As far as performance goes, he is likely the best QB in the country. Seems as if we are right in the thick of things (top 8 I would say) but Florida is going to be tough to beat given he grew up a fan and is a good fit for their system. Georgia also made a strong impression; I don’t think they are a huge player, because they already have a commitment from 09 QB Zach Mettenburger. Had this to say about Tennessee on scout:” I have not visited them yet, but they have a great staff, an unbelievable staff. They want to get me up there as soon as possible to check it out. They called last week and want me to come up." Murray is still sorting through his offers, and I don’t expect him to make a decision soon.
Wait And See: Chris Campbell (Tennessee): Kid from Briarcrest (Austin Long) in Memphis, has good height and above average mobility. Can throw very well on the run with good accuracy, but has mediocre arm strength. He showed up for the March one Junior Day and seemingly enjoyed himself, I would say we are in very good position. That being said he does not have an offer, and it is very questionable as to weather or not he will get one. I think that the status of Campbell depends very much on whether or not Casey Kelley makes it to campus. If Kelley makes it in, then I think this class becomes Boyd (who I think we will still recruit), Murray or bust. However if Kelley does go pro, then Campbell is one of a couple guys that could be a fallback.
Long shot: Kevin Newsome (Virginia): Great athlete and is from the tidewater area, but we are a long shot at this point. Still somewhat raw as a QB, many from VA think that Boyd is better. I would say he is a strong VT lean right now.
Running back:
Possible: Jarvis Giles (Florida): Shifty 4-Star back from Tampa that has offers from everyone in his area, including the big three. Is 5-11 175 and is one of the fastest people in the sunshine state. Really likes Stan Drayton a lot and is a big priority for the staff. He has stated many times; in certain terms that Tennessee is his leader. I feel very confident about this one, Jarvis wants to play in a balanced attack and is not interested in any type of spread. I think whenever we get him on campus for an official visit this one could be over.
Possible: Gabriel Hunter (Tennessee): It is always tougher than it should be to pull a kid out of Memphis. I know per Tennstud that Tennessee has already made a move with hunter but will have a lot of work to do. I think we would love to get Hunter and an out of state back like Giles and call it a day. He has not done many
Possible: Ronnie Wingo (Missouri): From STL and has an offer. Has been to Knoxville for an AAU event. We seem to be in it, but it is too early to get a good feel for this kid. He is a big power back with adequate speed. He is a 4-Star and Rivals Top 100 player.
Work To Do: David Oku (Oklahoma): We got in there very early with the old staff, will be interesting to see if the new staff picks up. Auburn is in very good shape here, as well as a horde of other big programs. He has said he wants to leave the state. We are in his top 8, but I think he is a guy who is still sorting through his offers. His recruitment will likely start to take shape when he selects his official visits. Oku is a short compact back that has great vision. He is a 4-Star and is a member of the Rivals 100.
Work To Do: Eddie Lacy: Has an offer, and we got in early. Runs with an absolute mean streak and punishes defenders. Is one of the best backs in the state of Louisiana. I think he would like to stay in state, but his grades could keep LSU from offering. If LSU does not offer, then it is anybodies game, us included.
Wait And See: Desmond Scott (North Carolina): Speedy back out of NC who is a top 100-type talent. Was scheduled to make it, but never showed up for the Junior Day. If we get him on campus this summer then I will have a much different tune. But until then it is hard to say that we are really in this one. I will wait, and reserve judgment until the summer is over.
Wait And See: Morgan Alexander (Georgia): Grew up a Vols fan and really, really likes us right now. Enjoyed himself at the Junior Day, and would likely commit if offered. That being said he is a little small and might be offered at a different position. He is listed at 175 but some reports have him in the high 150’s. Is a solid athlete with good-looking film. But I think he is pretty far down on the RB’s list right now. Whether or not he is a Vol come signing day will have a lot to do with how successful we are with the 09 class.
Wait And See: Warren Norman (Georgia): Speedy back from the same classification that Tauren Poole. Actually out-preformed Poole in the Georgia State Playoffs. Really likes Tennessee at this point, but is probably a long way away from an offer. He is not the same type of “if offered lock that Morgan Alexander, Perry James or Jerel Miller are, but that is only because h has never been on campus. I think we lead, but an offer is unlikely.
Long shot: Teric Jones (Michigan): Once stated that we were in his top 3. But it is starting to look like not much is going to happen here. I think there has been a mutual decrease in interest over the last couple months. Kid is a burner who ran a great time on a slow track at the Army All American Combine, but I think he will end up at Michigan.
Fullback:
Possible: Dominique Allen (Tennessee): Big in-state kid with slid feet for his size. Grew up a Vols fan and is looking like a Lock in my opinion, if locks really do exist. I think the only thing keeping him from biting is his buddy Marsalis Teague not having an offer. I think he might wait for Teague for a little bit, but no matter what happens, when push comes to shove I think he is a Vol.
Work To Do: Toney Williams: Not definitely a FB but that is where i see him ending up. Has an offer from Kentucky and is also receiving interest from Georgia, Vanderbilt and Florida. Was here for Junior Day but I have not heard him talk since then. I think he has an offer but I am not 100% sure. Williams will likely be one of the top FB in the country.
.Wide Receiver:
Possible: Marlon Brown (Tennessee): Is being courted by literally everyone in the nation, but I like where we are at with this one. If you read many of the early articles that Brown did, it is clear that we had an edge. Both the basketball and football programs have been courting him for quite a while now, and he has been to campus and been offered. While his most recent articles seem to indicate that things in his recruitment have evened out. I think that is partly because of new interest and partly because Marlon wants to be diplomatic, as many prospects do when teams like USC and Notre Dame court them. I don’t think that Marlon is like Chris Donald in the sense that he has an idea of where he is going to college. I think he is truly open as he himself suggests, that being said we are in better shape early than anybody else, and I predict that if things are pretty on and off the field we should land him. He likes Bruce Pearl a lot, and I think that basketball will play a really big role in his recruitment. Basketball is his first love and he is probably a better B-Ball player that football right now. That being said I think he likes Bruce Pearl a lot, I actually think Pearl left a bigger impression on him than Fulmer did. He said in an article on KNS that he is not even sure if he will have a decision by national signing day. If that is the case than Vol fans should not get over confident because we have a long way to go. We are the leader after the first couple of holes, but this kid will play 36 and we have to work to make it to the clubhouse.
Possible: Zach Rodgers (Tennessee): I think he could be our first high school commitment. I know that he has talked about Vandy and has offers from a couple of others including Bama and Super Trooper. But I expect his recruitment to shake out very similar to Todd Campbell’s. He will entertain a couple of schools, but he is all vol. I have heard this from a number of people.
Work To Do: Je'Ron Stokes: Recently has started to talk us up quite a but. Just received an offer and had this to say” I actually took an unofficial visit to Tennessee when I was a freshman in high school with my pastor and my friend Mark Jones who played there before going to the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” Stokes explained. “I loved it down there because the stadium was absolutely packed and the fans there get really crazy. The facilities were top of the line and I met Head,” Stokes explained. “I loved it down there because the stadium was absolutely packed and the fans there get really crazy. The facilities were top of the line and I met Head Coach Phil Fulmer who was very nice to me. I got to meet some of their players while I was there and watch them practice. It was just a great experience" Big time player and I think we are in it. Similar to a lot of players of Je’Ron’s caliber I think he is really just sorting through his offers right now. I don’t think there is a real leader even though the local schools probably have more exposure right now. This is one that has to be done over the phones; if we can get him in for a visit we have as good a shot as the other four teams.
Work To Do: Jamal Patterson (Georgia): Big physical receiver with offers from virtually everyone in this SEC right now. It looked early like this could be a Georgia-Bama battle, but I think the playing field has leveled. We did some good catch up when he was in Knoxville for the Junior Day. We are right in this one, and I think we are in a good position to get an official visit during the season.
Wait And See: J.J Suber (South Carolina): Kid is as raw as they come, but has some very good measureables. We will have to wait and see weather or not the staff offers (which will depend largely on his performance at the junior camp), if they do he is a legit possibility. However many in-state are a bit skeptical about his talents, saying that he is more of a combine player, and it does not look like Clemson and SC are coming hard.
Long Shot: Corey Brown (Pennsylvania): Has an offer, but I am not sure what is going on right now. I don’t think there is a lot of interest. He listed his top 4 and we were not in it. We have a lot of work to do if we want to get a visit.
Long shot: Kendall Kelley (Alabama): The instate schools are strong where he is from (Same school as Jerrell Harris) and I don’t like our chances given the fact that he and teammate Dre Kirkpatrick were scheduled but did not show for Junior Day.
Work To Do: Ruben Randle (Louisiana): I used to consider Ruben a long shot and LSU lock, but I am starting to think I was sipping on too much of the Louisiana cool aid. I am starting to see signs that Ruben will look around. He is the best WR in the 09 class and I say that with a tremendous amount of confidence. Many feel he was the best player in Louisiana as a junior. He has instant impact potential. Like is aid above he is going to take some visits. No I don’t want get anybody mixed up, he is at this point a pretty big LSU lean. Last year the Tigers offered 13 kids in-state and got 13 commitments, so that should give you and idea of how tough a task this is. Ruben admittedly does not know that much about Tennessee right now. But I get the impression that he has been talking to the coaches a decent amount. I would say with limited confidence right now that we are in good shape to get a visit. That being said this is not a Tennessee-LSU battle; there are dozens of schools in the mix including the USC’s of the world. Don’t get confident, but watch out for this kid.
Tight End:
Possible: Thad McHaney (Tennessee): Could play either TE or DE. We were the first one to offer and we have been on him ever. He did not grow up a Tennessee fan, but I think we have made a very big impression on him. He was here for Junior Day and seemed to really enjoy himself. Thad has talked about making an early decision, and that could bode pretty well for us. He is teammates with Alex Bullard and Larry Dabney and is part of the ongoing movement to create a pipeline at Brentwood Academy. McHaney and his boys are a big piece of this and future recruiting classes. I think we have left a very strong impression on Thad and o think we are his leader right now.
Wait And See: Joseph Sloan (Tennessee): Joseph is a fringe prospect at this point. He has received interest form many big time programs such as Auburn and us. But I don’t believe he has any offers at this time. H e has good size (6-4 240), is a solid blocker, and has good hands. He is not a freak athlete however and runs the forty in the high fours, which is the reason he is no an extremely high ranked prospect. I think Joseph will end up being a D-1 prospect, and I also think he likes Tennessee. But Tennessee’s involvement with him will likely have as much to do with timing as anything else. H e is not on the top of our board at TE and TE is not really a need position in this class. If Sloan performs well at some camps and Tennessee misses on some TE’s including McHaney, then there is a chance Joseph could be a very late addition to this class. But right now he is more of a fallback who is being actively recruited.
Work To Do: Logan Thomas (Virginia): Very versatile athlete who is being recruited as an H-Back. Thomas is a 4-Star and a Rivals-250 member. Moves great for a guy that is 6-6 220. I don’t think we have done much to impress him yet, but he will be in Knoxville on April 16th, so we will have our chance. Jason Michael is handling his recruitment and should get credit for the visit. We will if we are a player or not after the visit. He is visiting with his teammate who does not hold any offers, Logan holds around 10. He is very open right now; there is no inherent favorite.
.Offensive Guard/Tackle:
Possible: Andre Harris (Georgia): Liked Tennessee as a kid and has an offer, but his fan hood will not play a huge role. Lovejoy has been a good place for the Vols, Georgia and Auburn are 2 to watch out for; and Florida is in there strong as well. Was here for Junior Day and I think his recruitment will go all the way to signing day. No clear-cut favorite at this point, but we are in the mix
Possible: Kamran Joyer (Florida): Joyer is one of the most physically impressive kids I have seen this recruiting season. He is around 6-3 320 and really does not have much fat on him. He put up 35 reps of 185 pounds at a combine as a sophomore!!! Which is bordering on insane. He is not a great athlete, and does not have the quickest feet, which is why I see him more as a guard than a tackle. I posted his Sophomore film I the GQ a couple of days ago so if you are interested in watching just search his name that post will come up. His film shows what his numbers imply, that he is a man amongst boys. He absolutely dominated people once he gets locked in and this is as a sophomore. The one negative that his film does show is that he is pretty raw with his technique. He gets by with his strength on the high school level, and he is basically just shoving people out of the way. But if he wants to make it one the college level he is going to have to develop much better technique. But the kid has a mean streak that you just can’t teach, and if he buys in to the coaching he could be a great guard in college. He is by most local’s accounts a Top-50 player in the sunshine state, and has offers from South Carolina and us. Word is that Florida is close to throwing their hat in the ring with an offer, which could change things slightly. But as it stands right now I can say with great confidence that we lead for Kamaran Joyer. We are in really, really good shape here. We were the first team to offer him, and we have not let up since. He came to our Junior Day, which only opened our lead wider. Joyer said that he might want to make a decision in May which is very good news fro us. If his recruitment ended today I have no doubt we would land him. Things are always subject to change, but I think Joyer could be our first high-school commitment.
Possible: Alex Bullard (Tennessee): Alex is a 4-Star prospect and a member of the Rivals-250 list. He is one of the Top instate O-Lineman in a talent rich year. Alex is an important part of this recruiting class. He is being recruited by virtually everybody in the SEC. He is a very athletic offensive lineman, whom will likely have to put on some weight when he gets to the next level. He was here for the Junior Day, and while he does not list a leader, I think we are in good shape. Him and McHaney have talked about going to the same school and we have made a strong move with both of them. Alex is an important part of this recruiting class.
Possible: Courtney Easterwood (Tennessee): We offered Courtney very, very early, which should let you know how the staff feels about him as a prospect. While it is Memphis, we were able to pull Chris Walker out of the same high school with relative ease. He is an excellent athlete for his size and is a top 10 prospect in the state. I think we are in good position early.
Possible: Wesley Johnson (Tennessee): He is a little bit small right now as far as weight, but I have heard very good things about him as a technician and as a player. Being from MBA we are in a pretty good position early. He does not have an offer yet, but depending on what happens with guys such as Bullard and Easterwood he could get one. If he does get an offer, I would expect his recruitment to go very similar to that of Preston Bailey. He will takes some visits, but I would be surprised to see him go anywhere else. Wesley is at the front of the fallbacks line.
Work To do: Xavier Nixon (North Carolina): Is one of the top Offensive Tackles in the country. Not only does he have offers from everyone, but also he is the number 1 target on many schools board. The fact that schools like Georgia, Notre Dame and North Carolina want this kid more than anybody else out there will make his recruitment all the more difficult. Like many top prospect Xavier is sill sorting through his offers and trying to give everybody a look. He has mentioned the fact that he really wants to see Tennessee, so he is a guy to watch as a potential for our mid-April junior day. This kid is very diplomatic about the recruiting process and he does not have any biases. So I can t give you the “Scoop. It is as simple as it should be, Xavier won’t make any type of judgment until he sees us in person. It is a positive that he wants to make it in, but whether or not we get an official will depend on whether or not he enjoys himself.
Possible: Morgan Moses (Virginia): Mammoth out of Virginia has us listed as one of his top 3 teams. He is a 4-Star rivals 250 player. He has good athleticism considering the fact that he is 6-7 330 pounds. I like our chances to get an official visit, even though VT is historically very strong in this area.
Work To Do: Quinton Washington (South Carolina): Has an offer, and appears interested. Is by most accounts a top 10 player in the state of South Carolina. Blessed us with this disturbing quote a couple of months “I haven't visited there or talked to any of their coaches. They have a well-balanced team and their staff is good." To be fair this approach could have changed in recent months, and I would guess it has. Kid is a Kenneth Page (2008) clone down to the chinstrap beard. Just like Kenneth, if the staff does a good job I think we can get an official. It will be very difficult however to get him out of South Carolina
Work To Do: Austin Long (Tennessee): Austin Long is another top player at OT who is a 4-star and Rivals-250 member. The staff nearly put the GQ on cardiac arrest when they were beat to the punch by Georgia, Florida an Alabama in offering Austin. I think we fell behind early due to the exposure he had to those big time programs having visited them. However a solid visit to our Junior Day put us right back in the mix. There are a couple things about Austin that have people worried, he is from Memphis, he grew up a Gator fan, and we got in late. But I can tell you with real confidence that it think we are even with the pack here. Austin is not Barrett Jones; he doesn’t have any real ties to big programs. He seems like a very good kid, with a good head on his shoulders. He is going to go through the process and pick the school that is right for him. He will do this by visiting each school and talking to coaches. We are not in bad shape here; we are going to get a fair shake, just like all of the schools recruiting him. Like many out of Memphis, we will have to recruit him like an out of state kid, but an out of state kid that is interested. This is an old-fashioned recruiting battle that will come down to selling the University of Tennessee.
Work To Do: Jonnie Farms (Georgia): Kid already has offers from all the SEC powers and they got in before us. Originally said that he was favoring Alabama and Florida, But Jonnie really liked his Junior Day visit, and seems to like Fulmer quite a bit. Immediately after his visit to Knoxville he made it clear that Florida and Bama no longer led He is a little bit short at 6-1, but is an absolute monster at Guard. His film is absolutely littered with pancakes, and the kid has a mean streak. Is a national recruit who will take his visits, and i think Knoxville will be one of them.
Wait And See: Patrick Lewis (Louisiana): Liked us a lot early but said the staff has not talked to him in a really long time. Unclear weather or not he has an offer.
Wait And See: Aubrey Phillips (Tennessee):I have not seen any of his film just yet, but unless he is a very good athlete for his size (He is massive) I do not see us making a move there. Look for his recruitment to be similar to Jared Mcgaha (sp). He is not a take right now, in my mind.
Wait And See: David Born (California): Massive offensive line prospect from California, that we don’t know much about right now, except that he has impressed at some combines. Only has an offer from Colorado State, but has listed us throughout the process.
Long Shot: Nick Alajajian (Florida): Has an offer, but many think he is the top O-Lineman in Florida. I expect the big three to eat this guy up.
Long Shot: Marcus Hall (Ohio): Mentions us, but pulling a kid from Glennville away from OSU is near impossible. Has not talked in a while, and getting this kid into visit season would be big. But he is a long shot at this point
Long Shot: Eric Shrive (Pennsylvania): Top 100 player who just recently got an offer. Says he does not know much about the Vols right now, but is hoping to find more out. Looks a lot like Chris Farley.
Long Shot: John Martinez, Xavier Su'a Filo (Utah): Both of these Utah kids sport UT offers but have not mentioned us in articles. I would guess that both of these guys will stay out west.
Offensive Center:
Work To Do: Sam Simpson (Kentucky): Sam is probably the number one center prospect in the country and is fairly similar to Josh McNeil coming out of high school. Sam’s dad went to Kentucky and his high school in Lexington has produced many for the blue (Including Aaron Boyd). While Kentucky is the team to watch, we are in the mix.
Defensive Tackles:
Possible: Tyrone Stockton (New Jersey): Stockton is a DT from the Hun School in New Jersey (Myron Rolle), and has recently received an offer. He has 11 written scholarships in total and I would expect more to come. He is short at 6-1 but very strong and agile (4.9 forty). He seems to know about UT as a program and ha this to say in response to receiving an offer:” I like Tennessee a lot,” Stockton stated. “They play in the SEC which is an extremely competitive conference and I’ve heard their stadium is absolutely unbelievable on game day. I can’t wait to talk to Head Coach Phil Fulmer right now and I just know they have a great tradition at defensive tackle. Just a year ago a kid from here in New Jersey went from there to the NFL in Turk McBride. They almost won the SEC this year and have great tradition.” Stockton is a guy that I really like, and there is no inherent leader at this point. He is one to watch in the coming weeks. Getting him on campus would be a big first step. WE are not the only ones after him however; Penn State, Georgia Tech, Penn State, North Carolina and Rutgers are among those who have offered.
Possible: Darrington Sentimore (Louisiana): Darrington is by some accounts a top 5 player in the loaded state of Louisiana this year. May in-state feel that he is grossly underrated and should be a top 100 player. We have extended an offer (one of his 5) and appear to be making every overture possible to get him interested. He is the type of DT that John Chavis generally likes; he is 6-1,265, runs a 4.75 and is very powerful. I would describe him as a poor mans Jaccobi McDaniel (which is still damn good). The most intriguing thing about Darrington is that despite holding an LSU offer, he appears completely fine with leaving the state. He had this to say about the idea of packing his bags, "I am looking for some good coaches and a chance to play," said Sentimore. "I want to go somewhere that I know I am going to get looked at. It doesn't matter to me how big the school is. I just want to play." Now this quote sounds exactly like what many on this board have been crying for the coaches to pitch. It is still early, but i think getting Darrington on campus should be a priority. Neither Rivals, nor scout has done many articles on him, but his recruitment is certainly one to watch.
Possible: Raynard Randolph (Maryland): Could also play O-Line, has mentioned us for a while. Seems to be pretty far down on our DT board, and is not likely a huge priority.
Wait And See: Larry Dabney (Tennessee): I am not sure that he has an offer, though I have heard some good things about him. Would be a solid fallback at a need position. Is from Brentwood and is part of the potential pipeline we are trying to build. Might be a little but undersized and does not have great strength.
Wait And See: Deonte Cruise (Tennessee): Same high school as Montori Hughes. Big strong kid who can also play O-Line, bit if we took him it would likely be on D. At this point he is likely a fallback, but he has gotten some interest from big programs. Is a guy I think would be very responsive to an offer.
Work To Do: Duane Chisolm (South Carolina): We are one of his top 5 schools, although he grew up a South Carolina Fan. I think we should be able to get him on campus.
Work To Do: Dallas Lee (Georgia): Said he was surprised to get an offer from the Vols, but he did attend Junior Day. So we will see if that sparks some more interest. Has a very nice offer list and is being recruited as a D-Lineman for us. Other teams want him to play O, and he says he does not care.
Wait And See: Derrick Lott (Georgia): There isn’t really much info on him, but we all know DT is a need spot. He is receiving some interest from Georgia but does not appear to have any offers at this point. Like many we will know more after the Junior Day.
Long shot: Chris Davenport (Louisiana): Great player, but it looks like LSU number 1 with USC running second. I would not be shocked to see him visit us, but right now I think we are about 6th or 7th on his list with Florida and Bama ahead of us.
Long shot: William Campbell (Michigan): Let me start by saying I think he is a real long shot. That being said I do expect him to visit Knoxville before this process is done. He goes to the same high school as Teric Jones a guy who is giving us a look, however he committed to Lloyd Carr very early in the process. He has recently sated that he would like to take some visits essentially for the free food, but we all know that if you get the guy on campus, you have a shot. If he does take visits, we are on the top of the list of schools he would like to see. One odd note is despite the fact that he would be one of the 3 biggest gets of our last 3 recruiting class; he does not have an offer. I would expect that to change.
Long Shot: Demonte McAllister (Florida): This DT is thought of by those in the sunshine state as one of the most underrated prospects around. He has a very impressive offer list but is slightly undersized, reminds me a little bit of John Brown from 2007. He has an early offer from us, but is rumored to be an FSU fan.
.Defensive Ends:
Possible: Tyrel Wilson (Virginia): Vol bloodlines and has received an offer (Which could either mean a lot about him as a prospect or nothing ala Carson Anderson). Is seemingly yet to be evaluated by the recruiting services, but I have heard good things scattered around. Hopefully we should know some more as he attends some camps in the summer. Probably a top 25 player in Virginia and a mid-level 3-star.
Work To Do: William Ming (Alabama): Seems to like us quite a bit. Ming is a 4-Star and a member of the Rivals 250 list. He has the frame to potentially move inside and play DT. Some have felt from early on in the process that William was a Bama lock. But things seem like they have evened out. The fact that he has not already committed to the Tide, gives me the impression that he is open to looking round. He goes to the same High School that Tennessee DE Wes Brown went to. Ming says that he talks to Brown every once in a while. I think we have made a strong impression on Ming, and if he truly is as open as he says, then we are right in the thick of things
Work To Do: DeOnte Arnett (Maryland): Slightly undersized, but a very good athlete. Arnett is a 4-Star and a Rivals 250 player. He is still in the process of sorting through his offers. But it seems like we will get at least a look. We have done a decent job historically in this area, but there is a lot more out there. I think this is Slade’s territory, so it will be interesting to see how that shakes out.
Long shot: Chris Bonds (South Carolina): He lived in Tennessee for a short time as a child. He is interested in the in-state schools, but is by no means a lock. In fact he has said at times the he favors Alabama. Chris is a big time prospect, who is being courted by everybody. Has the frame to move inside and play DT. Very discouraged that he did not show up for Junior Day. I think our chances are slim,
Long Shot: Sam Montgomery (South Carolina): Tweener type DL very similar to last years William Green. Has not mentioned us that much, but does have an offer. Montgomery was scheduled, but did not show up for the March 1 Junior Day. I would say that spells bad things for Tennessee.
Long Shot: Devon Kennard (Arizona): Many feel Kennard is the top player in the country and every school that provides scholarships is after him. Among those schools include USC who is thought to be the clear favorite at this point. But Kennard has recently mentioned that Tennessee has extended an offer. He is a guy that I could see us making a big push for, especially if we are able to land somebody like McHaney early. He is at a need position and the staff expressed the willingness to go out to AZ last year when they actively courted Gerrell Robinson. I expect Greg Adkins to handle his recruitment, and while there is not much too get excited about yet, I think there is a chance we could work our way into one of his 5 visits. But by all means, Devon Kennard is a long shot.
Long Shot: Dyron Dye (Florida): Was recently offered along with his two teammates. While all three were supposedly excited about the offers, Dye is thought to be a huge Gator lean. Dye is a Four-Star tweener type DE. I don’t like our chances here.
Linebacker:
Possible: Jerel Miller (South Carolina): Likes us a lot but might not get an offer. Made it in for Junior Day so we will see if he can earn an offer.
Work To Do: Derrick Webb (Tennessee): Webb is a guy that I think is getting a bit overlooked on this board. Webb is yet to receive a major offer, but is getting interest from schools like Notre Dame, Alabama, Ole Miss and us. He will be in Alabama next week for their Junior Day. He says he likes the fact that Alabama is a big school, and is close to home. He attended an Addidas Elite camp on the Knoxville campus. He said he liked the history of Tennessee football. It is still early in the process but Webb says he is leaning toward playing in the SEC. If you ask me we are in good shape, it will be interesting to see if we offer. Impressed a lot of people at the army all American combine
Long shot: Frankie Telfort (Florida): Is a slightly undersized LB, but is a big time prospect nonetheless. Word is he will leave the state of Florida. Telfort mentioned us quite a bit early in the process, mainly because we were one of the first to offer. But it seems Frankie has cooled on us, especially since programs like ND have gotten in the mix. We have a lot of work to do if we want to get Frankie in on a visit.
Work To Do: Willie Farrell (Florida): Basically see above then add Florida and FSU into the mix. That equals long shot.
Work To Do: Chris Williams (Texas: Always tough to pull a kid out of Texas, but he list us early. Has offers from LSU, TTU, Oklahoma, and us, but if Texas comes in with an offer, this one could be over. However despite being a highly thought of prospect, because of numbers the longhorns might not offer. If you take the Longhorns out of the equation, then we still have some work to catch up to OKLA, TTU and Nebraska.
Work To Do: Tana Patrick (Alabama): Pulling him from Bama would be very tough but not impossible. He is certainly interested in the in-state schools, but not a lock. Has not mentioned us much before his visit, but he seemingly liked his March 1 Junior Day visit a lot. If he makes it back for an official visit during the season, Tana becomes one to watch.
Wait And See: Ridge Wilson (Kentucky): Things in general have been picking up for Wilson. I think he might have an offer from both schools instate. He is versatile, and I think he could end up at DE. He has really good height 6-4, and I think that if we recruit him hard it would be as an athlete. He has the ability to play at a couple of spots on the field.
.D-Backs:
Possible: David Sims (South Carolina): Tennessee, South Carolina and Alabama make up his top 3. We seem to be in pretty good shape, but he has been talking less and less about his recruitment in recent weeks. He was here for the March 1 Junior Day and is likely a top 10 player in the sate of South Carolina. I think we will get him back for an official visit and then see what happens.
Work To Do: Devonte Hollman (North Carolina): Devonte is still just sorting through his offers. He has offers from virtually every school in the south. He is a big safety, with solid athleticism. We have a lot of work to do to get Devonte in on a visit, but if we can do that then we are in the mix.
Wait And See: Perry James (North Carolina): It is pretty simple with Perry James; if we want him we can have him. His cousin Andre played for Tennessee and Perry has been on campus 3 times. He is a big corner with decent. He was here for the March 1 Junior Day. His recruitment will depend very much on how the rest of our recruiting goes. Right now there are some guys ahead of him on the board. If it does not work out with those guys then I am sure the staff would love to scoop him up, but right now they will wait and see.
Wait And See: D.J Swearinger (South Carolina): Strong Safety out of South Carolina had Tennessee as his top team a couple of weeks ago. He really likes Tennessee as a team, but we have not offered and I don’t think he is willing to wait for us. He has offers from Vanderbilt and Illinois and is starting to look at the schools that are looking at him. D.J is a good prospect, and supposedly ridiculously smart in terms of what he has to do on the football field. He will probably be about a 5.6/5.7 and top 15 in the state. I think an offer would put us right in the thick of things, if not at the top. But for right now Swearinger is moving on.
Work To Do: Eric Gordon (Tennessee): We are all aware of his situation, so I will just give you some tidbits I found. "I got the offer from Tennessee immediately. They were the first school to offer, “I love the Vols. I love their big stadium. Their coaches are real nice. I only went to a game, but it was a nice atmosphere. I know a couple of players up there. It’s a real nice place.” Now allow me to try and cut through the crap. Alabama and Florida jumped out to an early lead. It seems as if we have made up some ground in recent weeks. But we still have a lot of work to do. It is important to get him on campus again, as he was unable to make it for Junior Day. Work to do, but we are in the mix.
Work To Do: Ricardo Dixon: Described his offer from Tennessee as shocking, because he has not talked to a single coach. Once again, if we do not form relationships, these offers will end up in the trash not on the fridge. He likes FSU a lot, we will see if the staff does more.
Work To Do: Gabe Lynn (Oklahoma): Just recently offered, so we will have to wait and see if he talks us up. We appear to be trying to make some in roads in OKLA this year, and he would be a big part of that. But Lynn is apparently Oklahoma’s top target, and it would be very tough to pull him.
Work To Do: Terry Shankle (North Carolina):Is a big Corner, with some very solid offers. Was here for Junior Day and seemed to like it, but went to Alabama the next week and said he was blown out of the water. I think we will get an official and are in the mix. But right now I would call Bama the one to beat.
Work To Do: Ray Ray Armstrong (Florida): Big safety who was apparently excited to be offered by Tennessee. Is being courted by everyone including the big 3. I would say that we are a long shot at this point, but it is hard to tell because he as offered so recently. Is a teammate of DeBose and Dye.
Long Shot: Dre Kirkpatrick (Alabama): Was supposed to be in Knoxville for the March 1 Junior Day, but never made it. Would be very hard to pull this top 10 talent out of Alabama. Same high school as Jerrell Harris. I really don’t like our chances here and I almost took him off the board.
.Athletes:
Possible: Stephon Gilmore (South Carolina): Looks like this one could come down to the two in-state schools and us. Gilmore was here for the March 1 Junior Day and really enjoyed himself. He fro the same high school as Jonathan Hefeny and says he texts him quite a bit. I like where we are with this one. Gilmore is a big prospect, and I would expect him to be back for an official visit. I see this as a three-team race, with all parties even at this point.
Possible: Damien Thigpen (Virginia): Many want him to play in the secondary, but he is being recruited by Tennessee to play RB. Is being recruited by Larry Slade and seems to like us pretty good. Is slightly undersized but has very good speed and list us in his top 5 or so.
Work To Do: Donavan Tate (Georgia): Already has offers from LSU and in-state Georgia; I would say we trail those two right now. It will be very important to try to get him in on a visit because he plays baseball and will likely not have much time. Not sure yet on this on, cant get a great read.
Work To Do: Montrell Conner (Louisiana): Just got offered so we will have to see if he starts to talk us up. He is a big time prospect out of Louisiana and not an LSU lock. He is still pretty open, so we have a chance to get in here. But we are pretty behind at this point.
Wait And See: Marsailis Teague (Tennessee): We have started to make a move on both him and his teammate Allen. However Allen has an offer and Teague does not. I think he would commit on the spot if he got one, but I don’t know if he will at this point. Many on the board speak highly of him as a person and a player.
Long Shot: Andre DeBose (Florida): Lightning quick, but same story as is teammates Armstrong and Dye. Just received an offer and we will not know much until they start to talk about u.
Graveyard:
Work To Do: Jeremy Smith: Another OKLA running back with an offer. Don’t know much. Committed to OKIE State.
Possible: Edwin Baker: Childhood favorite, we will see if the staff gets more involved. Committed To Michigan State
Work To Do: Drayton Calhoun: we were first to get in there, but everybody is in now. We have offered and are in the thick of things. Committed to LSU.
Possible: Tajh Boyd: Has an offer and goes to Brent Vinson’s high school. Has said he likes us and is part of that tidewater area that we are looking to tap into. He has said that we are in the mix. Was in Knoxville for the March 1 Junior Day. Committed to West Virginia
Work To Do: Logan Heastie: Has been on campus and originally said that it went 1. Florida and 2. Tennessee. But he has now called Boston College his leader with Florida 2, we are number 5. Also from the tidewater area. Would be big if Latrell Scott could get us in the thick of things. Will be in Knoxville for the march 1 junior day. Committed to West Virginia
