I am far from an expert on basketball, most on this board are well above my level of expertise. But one thing I am well experieced in is reading and evaluating people. When Pearl first arrived, he did well with another's personnel, hope sprang high. Then after it became his personnel, it appeared to me they had a problem handling success. Early season prosperity including a signature win or two led to lofty rankings, but then it was as the team started to coast, resting on their laurels so to speak. When big games arrived, it could be said they choked, and promising seeds in the Big Dance were squandered. This pattern continued, and while it may be premature to judge the current season by the USC loss, I have to conclude that if there is a problem handling success, it starts with Coach Pearl.

premature is right. only one team doesn't lose in the tourney every year, while most don't even make it in. CBP has at least made the tourney every year, with pretty good seeds every time. we've had better seedings over the last 4 years with CBP than Duke has had with Coach K, with less highly-recruited players. unless you are used to cheering for UNC or something, be happy. once you are in the tourney, you are just one hot streak away from winning it all. does no one remember our only NCAA tourney hope every year being to win the SEC tourney, which we never did? i'll take high seeds and being 'upset' in the sweet 16 over that all day. these guys can't shoot this bad all year, right?

And how has that worked out?

I am no more satisfied with perpetual Sweet 16 losses than I would be with losing as SEC east champs in football.

Until Pearl begins to develop the talent he is bringing in, there will continue to be hand wringing.

He has upgraded the talent, no doubt, but the product certainly doesn't match the fair expectations. No, this is not based upon a single game.

If anything DePaul should have opened quite a few more eyes than the USC debacle.
