Can I get a quick run down of who was offered the job, and why they turned it down? I did not have a chance to keep up with the process.

Gruden - no interest, no offer made

Gundy - turned us down (probably not enough $$$ offered)

Strong - turned us down (same reason as Gundy)

No one else offered, though it was rumored that Hart talked to Larry Fedora of UNC.

Bottom line, Dave Hart pulled a complete Mike Hamilton on the University of Tennessee football program, and sold us out (if you look at the contract, you will soon discover that it reeks of Bama sewage).

Gruden, Gundy and Strong all gave us the stiff arm for various reasons; not interested and loyalty reasons.

It is rumored the UT admin has a higher GPA than the ncaa required for admission, that will scare alot of coaches off.
Quess cheek would like UT to join the ivey league !

But.......What?

What about all the rumors? I mean, Bill Parcells, Jon Gruden, Tommy Tuperville, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Belichick, Tony Dungy, Bill Cower, Chuck Norris, etc, etc?

You mean we only offered Gruden,Gundy, Strong and Jones?:peace2:

I live near Charlotte and last night the news said Fedora was offered. They interviewed someone he used to work with and he said Fedora told him he turned down a whole lot of money.

This post reeks of your ignorance.

You have come to the right place for on target, legit, incisive commentary of what went on behind the scenes. After all, this is the place where nearly everyone has a contact who is 'in the know' and could not wait to spill secrets held by UT AD.

IMO only Strong is the question. For someone who stated he wanted to coach in the SEC he should have been a lock. Cannot believe lure of ACC membership was a swaying factor, so have to rely on his statement of Loyalty. We have seen that in coaches like Cutcliffe.

Hart didn't "sell us out." I'm not sure how the contract reeks of Bama sewage but I'm pretty sure you're one of the only ones smelling it.

Also, you're wrong about Strong and Gundy.

Gruden did indeed turn us down but it was a pipe dream that he would come here in the first place. Hart didn't even offer the job to him but the fan base is what made the Gruden search so ridiculous. So I don't fault Hart there.

I fault Hart for going after Gundy. Gundy wasn't leaving Okst. It's his alma mater and I don't know why his name is always tied to other schools.

As for Charlie Strong, I think it was a good effort to get him and I think we offered him enough to get him to come but in the end, he's loyal to his school. Nothing wrong with that and it's not Hart's fault.

Then we get Jones, arguably a better hire than Strong. I'm personally not unhappy with how the search went down. I know I'm in the minority around here though.

ncvol17 didn't Strong turn down UTs offer, because he liked the loyalty that they showed him ? along with a huge contract,i forget which radio show i heard it on,but he had committed to UT and changed his mind over night, they should have loaded him up on the plane and brought him in

i agree with Gruden being a pipe dream,he likes to get his name publicized and out in the media, for any hire and will continue to,till somebody hires him or he signs another contract with ESPN,i do believe the fans made more out of it,than it should have been and yes a lot of media people jumped on it,because the fans wanted to hear it

The bottom line is that Hart did not do his homework very well.
1. Gruden never was interested, just a publicity whore
2. Strong was only interested in using UT to get a raise
from Louisville. He fears the SEC.
3. Gundy obviously wasnt leaving OS, he just built a
2 million dollar home there & got a recent extention
4. Fedora was a first year coach at NC and obviously
wasnt leaving, only a POS like Kiffen would make a
move like that
So, in short Hart wasn't very well prepared for this search and ended up making himself and UT look like idiots. However, with that said, he ended up with a good hire here and I believe we will be pleased with Jones. The way it was handled was unprofessional and regardless of the success of Jones, Hart should be sent packing!
