So look at Oklahoma vs. Tennessee here.

Tennessee has:

1. More 5 stars and 3 stars than Oklahoma (OU has 0 5* and 9 3*)
2. Tennessee and OU are tied on 4*
3. Tennessee has a higher average star rating

Yet Oklahoma is ranked ahead of Tennessee? Source is Rivals.com 2023 Team Ratings.

You need to look at their commit list individually. Shows the point distribution there

Our our 4 star players could be more like 4.1 star players and their players might be more like 4.4 star players.

Rivals ranks the top 20 prospects only and they give graduating bonus points for players in the Rivals250 that starts with 100 points for the #1 player and 3 points for #250. While Tennessee has the #4 player in Iamaleava, OU has 4 in the top 70 before UT gets another ranked player at 71. The weighted bonus points are what pushed OU a little above the Vols.

It's all explained on Rivals website.

Likely the same as 247 - higher players are weighted more.

They may also have a handful of very low ranked guys dragging down their average...but once you get to the bottom 5-10 guys, they aren't worth much to the point total anyway...due to the weighting.

Fwiw research supports this - the goat Bill C. did research on this and actually said your top 10 recruits/class was a better correlator to success than looking at entire classes. Not too surprising since 100 guys recruited every 4 years turns into 44 players in the 2 deep. It's about what you can put on the field at the end of the day.

And Venebles will need those incoming recruits to contribute immediately to turn it around next season. Another 6-6 year and he’s gone

Yeah, I missed the "points"

Sounds like we need a more robust system. For example one with 8 star, 7 star, 6, star, etc.

More ratings to be more accurate.
