On that 4th down at mid field? This is exactly the train of thought: “ We can take a chance here. Too early in the game. Let’s play field position. No way we’re going for it. Let’s pin em deep.”

Boys those days are over. There’s a new sheriff in town and the decades of stupid, conservative, scared play calling have come to an end.

Fulmer would’ve punted there 1,000,000%. If you held a gun to his head he punts. “Dadgum it you gotta play field position.”

And they were dead wrong…and he cost us countless games with his silly punts and FGs. Spurrier relished in it.
Poorly written revisionist history. Fulmer won us the only title we have since the post WWII era. He played his style to the tune of 150 wins overall and only 5 losses in his first full five years. What CSS reslished in is no concern of ours. GoVols.

No….he didn’t win anything. The countless NFL players on the field did. He actually cost us countless wins and killed us in countless big games. He simply out talented teams and never outcoached the opposition. You know it’s true whether you admit it or not. His actual coaching ability is what brought this program to its knees and why he was run out of town on a rail. You know as well as you’re sitting in that chair that every week we played you knew we would be outcoached….the question was could our horses overcome it. Period.

Some guys are just comfortable in those moments. Heupel is very comfortable going for a risk and knowing his team has his back. He gets more production out of every position than the talent should merit. When someone makes a mistake their teammates pick them up. Not the most talented team in this decade even but damn these guys believe in each other and their coach and want to play for each other.

Cmon…Fulmer did a great job with this program until the 2000s. We were in the mix almost every year, and won it all once. I appreciate those good years.

I also appreciate what Heupel has done and is doing. It is more impressive given what he inherited (Fulmer did inherit a very good roster…although he made it way better through his recruiting prowess). Let’s hope we see multiple titles during his tenure.

Doc, I like a lot of the things you say on these boards.

You are totally in the wrong here.

To show so little appreciation for what Phillip Fulmer did for the Tennessee Volunteer program is to disrespect the program itself.

To misunderstand the role of the head coach so badly that you'll tie yourself into pretzel knots to avoid giving him any credit for what his teams accomplished comes across as petty and spiteful. It feels almost as if he kicked your dog once back in time and you're leaving that part out.

Phillip Fulmer is -- so far -- the second-best head coach in Volunteers history. And that's saying something, given that the General occupies the #1 spot.

Now, Fulmer may not be our #2 for much longer. Josh Heupel is making a very strong push, right out of the gate. There may come a day when Fulmer is relegated to third-best.

But you know what? He will still be our third-best. And for now, let's respect him as the #2 guy in our program's illustrious history.

Hate on him as a man if you must. Denigrate his performance as AD, for sure. But respect him as a head coach of the Vols.

You’re being a little too hard on Fulmer. He was from a different era. Used to be a lot of coaches like him. He believed in execution. You execute perfectly you’ll win. The game just passed him by and he refused to adjust. No he wasn’t a great coach on game day but he was great during practice week.

Brother you just said exactly what my point is: He was not a great coach on game day. That’s all I’m saying. He cost us sooooooo many games that shouldve been won.

Spurrier was like Heupel is now. He played a different game and changed the game. I believe Heupel is doing that now right before our eyes. Miles just wasn’t afraid to take chances

I would love to see a UT / UF game with Spurrier of the 90's going up against Heupel. That would be fun to watch. Spurrier having Bob Stoops as DC for UF would give me concerns but our D is playing better.
