No….he didn’t win anything. The countless NFL players on the field did. He actually cost us countless wins and killed us in countless big games. He simply out talented teams and never outcoached the opposition. You know it’s true whether you admit it or not. His actual coaching ability is what brought this program to its knees and why he was run out of town on a rail. You know as well as you’re sitting in that chair that every week we played you knew we would be outcoached….the question was could our horses overcome it. Period.
Doc, I like a lot of the things you say on these boards.
You are totally in the wrong here.
To show so little appreciation for what Phillip Fulmer did for the Tennessee Volunteer program is to disrespect the program itself.
To misunderstand the role of the head coach so badly that you'll tie yourself into pretzel knots to avoid giving him any credit for what his teams accomplished comes across as petty and spiteful. It feels almost as if he kicked your dog once back in time and you're leaving that part out.
Phillip Fulmer is -- so far -- the second-best head coach in Volunteers history. And that's saying something, given that the General occupies the #1 spot.
Now, Fulmer may not be our #2 for much longer. Josh Heupel is making a very strong push, right out of the gate. There may come a day when Fulmer is relegated to third-best.
But you know what? He will still be our third-best. And for now, let's respect him as the #2 guy in our program's illustrious history.
Hate on him as a man if you must. Denigrate his performance as AD, for sure. But respect him as a head coach of the Vols.
