Can you imagine the outrage?

Interesting - an innocent argument can be made about cataloging discussion but clearly civil libertarians should be massively concerned about the government collecting and cataloging all discussion involving the government (by private citizens). Very Big Brother-ish.

Agreed. Moreover, if it had been those "other guys" doing it that is precisely how this would be portrayed. I'm curious how this will treated by the media, assuming of course it's recognized at all.

The fact that this is trying to be done in secret makes one wonder what the true intent of government is in this case. As bad as Bush and company were they did everything up front.

I would be interested to know what others feel is the intentions of this administration here.

I'm not sure it's really being done in secret. The RFP is publicly available.

I guess I got that impression from the piece was that this was kind of slipped under the radar.

I think that since this is the government doing this, they need to be very clear about what information they are collecting.

Are you saying you want transparency? I am sure they will outline what they are doing it on their website and explain the reasons for it on account of his promise for "a new level of transparency, accountability, and participation by American citizens." Just check his website for an update any second now.

I agree, they also need to explain the purposes for which they are collecting it.
