I watched this second half and it amused me to think of how much Nebraska fans should celebrate this win. The defense kept them in this game and when they had a chance to put it away they immediately attacked and got it done.We should've been happy with this hire, remember?
Edit for clarification: Im talking about Shiano, but it's ironic that we wanted the winning teams fired coach. View attachment 497799
it was a meh hire from the get go, despite the connection to PSU. No one wanted this job. Remember? We couldnt even steal Purdue's coach away.We should've been happy with this hire, remember?

But Nebraska fans excited about a win against Rutgers? Ouch.
I've become convinced that there are so many folks who frequent vn.com, no matter what coach is brought up, some small group here will (loudly and repeatedly) clamor for him. Frost, Schiano, Kiffin, Leach, Mullen, Freeze, Malzahn, etc, etc, etc, there is no end to it. Someone will want any dude with a pulse. Loudly. Repeatedly.
Luckily, none of us are in charge of the athletic department. Because when it comes to picking great coaches, most of us suck at it (including those of you sitting back and saying, 'not me'). Even more luckily, Dan White seems to be a genius at it.
Go Vols!
I think Dan White's short list looked exactly like this:I admire the concept of “keep it in front of you.” from elite QBs who lead epic comeback wins to executives building teams. I apply that to Dan White from his hire date onward. I’d be first in line if he ever wrote a book and we could tap into his mindset in taking over this mess of a job where every “expert” declared we were in store for at least a decade before being relative again. Wonder what name would have been his ideal hire? Got quickly to Heupel with reality being a handicap. Would wager that Leipold would have been one of the next names all things being equal. It’s fun when it works.
Don't disagree but Elliott was offered...so thank the heavens for Dabo interference.I think Dan White's short list looked exactly like this:
1. James Franklin.
2. Josh Heupel.
I think those two fellas were his "ideal hires." Period.
While he was trying to finesse Franklin, White supposedly had feelers out with Leipold. But he never got around to asking if the guy wanted the job. By the time Franklin said no, White knew he wanted Heupel.
I don't think Elliott was offered anything. I think White put feelers out to him while offering the job to Franklin (you can't offer the job to 2 guys at the same time). But he never offered the job to anyone after Franklin said no, except Josh Freakin' Volunteer Bleeding Orange Heupel.Don't disagree but Elliott was offered...so thank the heavens for Dabo interference.
I think he was. Hence the story on Dabo selling him on staying at the last second. It was in the Athletic but can't find the story to link. There was widespread political pressure to hire an African-American HC or a proven name so Heupel's choice drew some criticism.I don't think Elliott was offered anything. Everything else was just fan talk and fiction, I believe.
Yeah, I didn't believe any of that. Didn't believe it at the time, don't believe it today.I think he was. Hence the story on Dabo selling him on staying at the last second.
