Mariotti's that loud mouth that picked Cal to destroy us last year, isn't he?

That's not his job, Mariotti doesn't follow college sports. Collegiate athletics in the state of Illinois are generally terrible. The MVC has been decent, but Northwestern is bad at everything and UI-UC is only good at hoops now and then. As far as most Illinois folks go, it's Cubs/Sox, Bulls, Bears and that's it. Expecting a guy like Mariotti to intelligently discuss college sports is like asking the Secretary of Defense to discuss inflation rates.

Either way, he's one of those too quick to persecute Rex. Granted, Grossman will probably never be a franchise player. The best I ever see him being is a Trent Dilfer type, serviceable to tell him "All you have to do is just get the ball to the guys behind you and don't throw it." Like I've said before, at Rex's worst, he's all-time bad. Sometimes he plays so bad, Lovie Smith just ought to grab any QB out of an inner city Chicago high school and stick him in, because he'd probably do better.

I disagree with the column as a hole. While you definitley need a guy who won't suck (Grossman can't fill that role consistently enough - mediocre QB play can win you a championship, great/terrible can't), you don't need a big-timer taking the snaps.
