I'm getting new car insurance and I was looking for some help/advice/thoughts on what is needed. I know there are state requirements, but I'm looking for more specifics

A few things: I drive a new 2014 Pathfinder that I bought last winter. I'm young (under 25), single, no kids, employed, have only one moving violation on my record, and am a safe driver.

Looking for advice on what to get coverage on (and how much). Don't want to overspend on unnecessary things, but want to be fully covered just in case something were to happen.

some categories: comprehensive, liability, collision, bodily injury, uninsured motorist, property damage,

Get at least $100k/$300k liability and same on uninsured motorist

Yep.. And if you've got any significant assets or income, spend the money and buy umbrella coverage.

Get as high a deductible on collision as you can afford.

Comp is cheap, so you may want a lower deductible on it than collision.

Buy it through a local agent; not some guy wearing a headset at an 800#.

This. I work in insurance defense. Don't settle for minimums, they rarely will cover medicals if you cause an accident or if someone uninsured causes one with you.

Also get medical payments coverage.

I sell insurance. Do yourself a favor check with multiple agencies. Make certain each agent tells you exactly what has been quoted. Most of the time if an agent does not disclose the coverage quoted, something important is not being rated. Many times the big names can be beaten. 100/300 limits are becoming more common. Just know that in any accident, you cannot anticipate what somebody could try to sue you for. I say that so you know to buy the highest limits that you can afford.

I sell insurance for Answer Financial here in Knoxville. I wear a headset and you call an 800# to get me.

I also have 25 different companies I shop at once, I don't charge any form of a fee for my service, and I work hard to get you the best rate. Basically be careful with the broad brush, I do exactly what a local agent does, I just have more options.
