Vanderbilt forward DeMarre Carroll will transfer at the conclusion of the spring semester after spending two seasons with the Commodores.

The rising junior told teammates yesterday he will attend Missouri, The Tennessean has learned, but has also requested and been given releases to N.C. State, UAB, Marquette and Memphis.

Carroll's uncle, Mike Anderson, was recently named coach at Missouri after leaving UAB.

"DeMarre feels to accomplish his goals in basketball it is in his best interest to transfer at this time," Vanderbilt Coach Kevin Stallings said in a statement. "Given the makeup of our roster, he feels that significant playing time on the perimeter is not likely. We certainly wish DeMarre all the best."

Carroll did not immediately return a voice message left on his cell phone last night.

"We appreciate Coach Stallings' understanding and willingness to grant a release so that DeMarre can pursue the opportunities that we feel are in his best interest," Carroll's father, Ed, said in the statement.

"We have enjoyed our affiliation with the Vanderbilt basketball program and wish them great success."

Carroll and Stallings appeared to have a good relationship, and Stallings often gushed over Carroll's work ethic, toughness and tenacity. He singled out Carroll's efforts during Vanderbilt's two victories against Kentucky last year and didn't shy away from questions when asked if Carroll was the team's most valuable player.

Carroll (6-foot-7, 214 pounds) became a consistent starter early into Southeastern Conference play and started the final 14 games. He averaged 10.9 points per game entering the NIT, but his knack for creating turnovers, his ability to defend taller players, and his offensive rebounding was his greatest contributions to the team.

Carroll's desire to play on the perimeter more was the main reason for the transfer. With Shan Foster and Derrick Byars having solidified their spots on the wings, Carroll would have likely played forward again next season. His signature shot was a dependable floater in the lane, but Carroll struggled from the perimeter last season and went 3-of-17 from 3-point range.

Once Carroll transfers, his scholarship will immediately become available. Vanderbilt isn't expected to use the scholarship this season, much in the same way as the scholarship situation with Davis Nwankwo. Nwankwo suffered cardiac arrest during practice last season and was revived by team trainer Mike Meyer. It ended Nwankwo's career but the NCAA allowed Vanderbilt to receive a scholarship to replace Nwankwo's.

Stallings said at the time that he would not use Nwankwo's scholarship until the 2007-08 season.
