Former Vol QB Joins State Coaching Staff

By David Murray Editor-Dawgs' Bite
Date: Aug 3, 2005

With preseason work beginning tomorrow, Mississippi State has added a new member to Coach Sylvester Croom's coaching staff with the appointment of former Tennessee quarterback Casey Clausen as a graduate assistant.

Clausen's responsibilities begin immediately, and according to MSU officials will focus on administrative work with Croom's staff. Under NCAA rules only two graduate assistants are allowed for on-field coaching.

For this fall those slots are held by Ryan Hollern, now in his second season assisting the offense; and Kevin Murphy, in his first year at State after coaching at Starkville High School in 2004.

Clausen was a four-year starter at Tennessee, on teams that won 37 of 51 games with one SEC Eastern Division championship and a co-title his senior year. In 2003 Clausen threw for 27 touchdowns and 2,968 yards as the Vols went 10-3.

At Tennessee he played under a staff that included three current Mississippi State aides: Bulldog assistant head coach and offensive coordinator/quarterback coach Woody McCorvey (at UT from 1998-2003), cornerbacks coach/recruiting coordinator Shane Beamer (2001-03), and assistant to the head coach Brad Pendergrass (1998-2003).

Clausen will join a football office administrative staff with coordinator of operations Rockey Felker and Pendergrass.

Clausen comes from a West Coast football family well-known around the Southeastern Conference. Two Clausens, Casey and younger brother Rick, have played quarterback in the league. And there is a third coming along as youngest boy Jimmy is already one of the nation's top-ranked triggermen out in West Lake Village, Cal. He will be a 2007 recruit.

That is very good news. Never new that Casey was interested in coaching.

Because Casey's brother isn't the quarterback of the team he's coaching.

I wonder why he didn't come to UT, though?

"I suppose this is different than CJ Leak going to UFs staff how??"

Yes it is, Miss. State is not a regular foe. And at least HIS brother does not play for another team.

Hmm..I would think you guys would be more understanding that a brother would like to work with his brother. I guess not.

Totally....most Vol fans dislike CL so no matter what happens in relation to him it will be viewed as negative.

C'mon, G"ville, this is college football, NOT the Waltons. If they were THAT close, Chrissy would have come on to UT simply because his BELOVED brother was there.

Gator fans kill me.

Someone already bought it LIO.

A Gator fan, and Urban supporter, to keep the same thing from happening again.

He prolly would have if they played different positions. Both being QB's would have made no sense.

this is totaly diffent than cj. CJ is a little punk who went crying to everyone when he said he didnt get his "fair" shot at competing for the number 1 spot. He told his brother not to come to UT. that is enough to piss me off. He knows UF is the one place where we dont want him to be, so that is where he went. It is really just a family full of a bunch of losers. He wasnt a real good qb, his brother is decent but will never win anything, ahh I feel sorry for there father.

only the uninformed would believe that.

Yep play for a school whose tradition didn't start til the 1990's. :laugh1:

Shall I reiterate:

UF's record without Tennesseans or Ex-UT coaches as Head Coaches
271-206-27 .564 7 Bowls

UF's record with Tennesseans or Ex-UT coaches as Head Coaches
326-158-13 .669 25 Bowls

Hmm Im sure he kept in mind where UF's coaches were from? What a stupid thing to say.

He could have started right away, and play with tons of talent, go to one of, if not the best U in the south, and have some of the best facilities to work in.

You guys make it seem like no sane player would ever pick UF over UT, which simply isnt true. You dont have thaaat much history, which you guys make it out to be. Remember the days of, "you cant spell citrus without UT? My point is, UF has just as much, if not more to sell to recruits than UT.

no, no sane player would have picked uf over ut when your brother plays at ut and you and suppose to have this big bond. Yeah right he had a motive and you know it. If they wanted to be together so much he would have went to UT with his brother. get out of here with that crap.

Or, a. he didnt want to have to compete with his brother playing the same pos. and all. or he wanted to start right away at a prime time program.

Shouldn't Casey still be playing and working out.....such as NFL Europe, Arena League, something like that? Why does he suddenly feel the need to start at the bottom on a crap program's coaching staff?
