Kurt Kittner and the Admirals
concluded camp with another
strong showing.
(waynepaulo.com)

Once thought to be in the running for the starting position in Cologne, Clausen now finds himself in a position where he may not play significant time at all this season. However, as rosters begin to take shape prior to the season, in all likelihood, Clausen will be activated and see some action in Admirals games.

If some of you do like I do, I usually pull for teams with former Vols on them.

Not only do the Admirals have QB Casey Clausen.... they also have DE Omari Hand.

The only other Vol in NFLEL is DE DeAngelo Lloyd playing for the Berlin Thunder.

I finally found a report on the Cologne Centurions final training camp scrimmage...

Last action heroes…NFLEL teams complete camp with final scrimmages
03/19/05 - National Football League Europe (NFLE)

NFL Europe League teams took their last shots and threw the final passes of training camp in Tampa Bay, Florida, with a series of game condition scrimmages at the University of Tampa.

Coaching staffs departed quickly at the conclusion of the action to study film and decide which 48 of their players will be flying with the teams to Europe this week for the kickoff of the season on April 2. Details of those roster moves will be announced later this weekend.

Here is what happened on the field:

Amsterdam Admirals vs Cologne Centurions

Cologne quarterback Chris Lewis (Arizona Cardinals) connected on 5 of 6 passes for 55 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown to C.J. Jones (Cleveland Browns). Kevin Thompson (Buffalo Bills) was 3 of 5 for 34 yards, while Casey Clausen (Kansas City Chiefs) completed all 3 of his passes for 21 yards and Japanese passer Kentaro Namiki completed 3 of 5 passes for 20 yards.

Dwone Hicks (Chicago Bears) was the Centurions’ top rusher with 19 yards on 4 carries, with the receptions spread around among 11 different Cologne players. Carl Morris (San Diego Chargers) had 2 catches for 22 yards.

Amsterdam quarterback Kurt Kittner (Chicago Bears) completed 6 of 9 passes for 58 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown to French tight end Yoan Schnee. Running back Jonathan Smith had a 34-yard gain among his 4 carries for 38 yards, while Ruvell Martin (San Diego Chargers) was the team’s top receiver with 2 catches for 15 yards. Kicker Chris Snyder (Houston Texans) landed his two field goal attempts, from 51 and 35 yards. Cologne linebacker Greg White (Chicago Bears) had a pair of sacks.

From the quotebook

“It has been real good camp. These guys have a real desire to do what we are asking them to do. We have been slower in some areas and faster in others but we will continue to improve things and take the next step forward. We have come out fairly healthy and I feel pretty good about where we are at right now.” – Amsterdam head coach Bart Andrus

“Like every training camp, you have your ups and your downs and you have your difficulties that you have to overcome. I certainly think it was a strange year in that we were hurt in our offensive line quite a bit. That causes you to have to be patient in the way the offense makes progress. I like what I've seen. I think our offensive line is starting to gel and provided we can stay healthy everything will work out positively." – Cologne head coach Peter Vaas.

Clausen's stats in four scrimmages were.... 17-of-19 (89.5%) for 185 yards and 1 TD.

With stats like that, how can he not be starting in NFLEL???

He will get his chance, maybe not this year, but he needs to just keep going at it.

In 1995, Andy Kelly was the backup to Heisman winner Gino Torretta for the Rhein Fire. Kelly did not play much in the first few games, but by season's end, he was the Fire's starting QB and set records...

"Kelly spent two seasons playing for the Rhein Fire of the World League (1995-96). He led the Fire holding the then club records for career passing yards (2,797) and touchdown passes (17). In 1995, he threw for 1,464 yards and eight touchdown passes. In 1996, he threw for 1,333 yards and nine scores."

Remember, NFLEL seasons are only 10 games.

The Admirals (3-1) starting qb, Gibril Hamden, broke his collarbone during this week's game. Backup, and former NFL starter, Kurt Kittner will take over the starter's role. Casey Clausen should be activated from the practice squad to act as the primary backup to Kittner. Clausen may see some action after all.... there are 6 games remaining plus the Admirals have the best record in the league and may qualify for the world bowl.

I experienced Kurt Kitner first hand when he was with Atlanta . . . he may be one of the worst NFL QBs that I have ever seen. Clausen WILL see some playing time.
