Saw this on SI.com this morning:

Casey Kelly, SS, Sarasota (Fla.) High

Kelly's a quality pitcher, but his future at the next level probably lies in the infield, just like his father, Pat, who played eight years in the majors. Casey has a smooth swing and could develop into a top-notch power hitter. Some scouts say he will eventually shifted from shortstop to third base. Kelly also signed with the University of Tennessee as a quarterback. The lure of SEC football makes him the player most likely on this list to actually attend college and could lead to him falling on some draft boards.

Prediction: Top 20 pick

I don't remember where I saw it at, but some website had him as the 8th best high school baseball player in the country.

I hope he skips baseball and come to play QB for us. We will really need him for depth in the next couple of years.

Why would he skip a huge signing bonus and a guaranteed contract to wait in line to play QB for at least two years? Plus if he ever does make it to the NFL, he can expect a shorter career with no guaranteed contract.

I'd say his decision is pretty easy

I think I remember his dad pushing for him to go to UT.

Baseball america just ranked him as the #20 prospect for the MLB draft. That was of both college and HS kids.

way too much money to walk away from. my guess is that he never wears the O&W

Casey is not good enough to play in the NFL. If he does choose to come here then he will turn pro after 3 years and choose the baseball route.

Isn't it a little early to decide he isn't good enough to play in the NFL someday if he chooses to play football in college?
Although, I don't think he ever plays college football. He will probably get drafted in June or whenever the baseball draft is.

There is no probably about it. He will be drafted. The draft is about 50 rounds. It is just how high he will get drafted that is the question. 2nd round pick or better he is probably gone but chance he could come here in hope of getting a huge signing bonus as a first round pick out of college. If he is a first round pick (which it looks like he will be) he will definitely be gone. That would just be to much money for him to pass up.

He could always got he Kelly washington route. If things don't work out in baseball Tenn. might still be interested in a few years if he still has a good arm. Isn't that what Chris Winkie done at FSU?

Casey is considered by some the top shortstop prospect in the country. I dont see him ever wearing Orange and I dont see him failing at baseball like your examples. I could maybe see him putting a clause in his contract that if he isnt in the majors by the end of his contract they have to pay for his college tuition. I dont think thats going to be a problem with the way the BB scouts rave about him.
