Casey Mears Fails Inspection After Shootout

Wow! A whopping 1/8 of an inch! Couldn't make any appreciable difference. Agree with writer that no points should be deducted, not a points race. Car passed pre-race inspection, surely HMS crew wouldn't cheat. :whistling:

i think Casey Mears is going to have a big year. they finally got him away from the dreaded 25 team and with a Chase team/crew chief. i also think Gustafson might be the second best crew chief at Hendrick.

also, it does seem like the cars at HMS are too low a lot.

You would think they could afford to buy a good tape measure!!

I agree with you re: Mears, he is underated and should
have some high finishes with a win or two. I met his Dad and Uncle at Mid-Ohio, classy people who do their talking on the track.

Rick Mears was my racing hero as a kid and remains one of my all-time favorites. I can't root against the family even if I had to.

I met Rick at Mid-Ohio a couple of weeks before the 1st Indy Car race held there. He and the Unser brothers were testing, and I was a corner worker that played hookey from work to be there. During breaks, we could come into the pits and talk to them. Rick was very gracious and genuine, and thanked us for being there.
Al Sr was mostly that way, but Bobby was very stand-offish. Wouldn't say much, and seemed irked by requests for autographs. Rick was the quickest to get up to speed, and had the fast line down right away. I remember the Unsers coming out to the section where I was stationed to watch him to try to get it right. Bobby said to Al he thought Mears was not using the fastest line and Al replied, "well it's sure faster than you big brother"!

In his eyes, Bobby Unser is the greatest race car driver that ever walked the Earth. And nobody will ever come close.

There is no doubt he had talent, but he became a legend in his own mind. I had always thought of him as one of the best, but he really disappointed me with his personality. Al Sr is much different, never met Al Jr, but he certainly has his personal problems.

i dunno if i could put Bobby in a top 5 all time list, but he certainly would deserve consideration for a top 10 list.

i would probably put him 3rd in his own family, Al Sr. first obviously. there's no telling how may 500s Little Al could have won with Penske had they not split into the two series.

Interesting, I had the same thought back at that time. I think when it came to Indy, no one appreciated the importance of the race, nor tried any harder to win it. I really pulled for him, the race with Emmo was a classic for the ages. Not too many drivers would have given the thumbs up in that situation. It truley saddened me to find out what he became.

there's probably not a more classy race car driver than Emerson Fittapaldi.

i think Little Al said it best 1992 when, in tears, he said "you have no idea what this place means to me" in Victory Lane.

Agree and agree again. Emmo did make a bit of a faux pax when he drank orange juice in Victor Lane, but he did apologize later.

yeah, it's wasn't really a huge deal because 1. he was a great guy and 2. he owned the grove the orange juice came from in his native Brazil.

the second part may be urban legend, but it makes the story better.

He either had some sort of ownership or was a Spokesman for the Brazillian Orange Growers, I don't believe it was just a legend. The Milk Group in this country made quite a stink over it.
