Yes, we'd all be crazy to think that Martin could take a guy that actually played the position in HS and turn him into a better PG than Golden. You guys are crazy if you think anyone not named Trae Golden will be starting at PG next season.
Yes, we'd all be crazy to think that Martin could take a guy that actually played the position in HS and turn him into a better PG than Golden.
After all, he hasn't shown much ability to develop players this year. Now has he?
I don't think the OP was doubting ccm "could" bring someone in, it's that he believes he won't. Ccm has repeatedly said he believes trae is going to be an elite PG in the sec when he leave here. He also recently made a statement when asked a question, and said that golden is our PG of the future here, he isn't switching positions.
Take it as you will, maybe it's coach speak, but ccm is a pretty straight forward guy. IMO I think that's whatvthe op was eluding to that, yes ccm "could" bring someone in maybe to compete, but no he isn't going to.
Personally I like the decision. You need the scholarships for our 2 and 3 positions bad, and we really would like to land Mitchell. To me upgrading our PG position would be about a 3rd priority, and Martin clearly feels the same or he'd be bringing someone in to push golden out.
So you would expect him to say - Golden is our PG until we can find someone that can do a better job.
Wouldn't that be just what Golden needed for his confidence.
Fact of the matter is Golden isn't quick enough nor does he have the ball handling skills to be an elite PG.
He's mediocre now and best he'll ever be is average.
Don't think for a minute that if Stanton shows the ability to move the ball down the floor and average 7 Assists a game as he did in his JR year in HS, Martin wouldn't jump at the chance to move Golden to the 2 where he belongs.
If he is an average PG, then why are both is assist and assist to turnover both way above average in the league? Is he te best in the sec? No. But to claim he is average I don't think is fair, Melvin goins was average, trae leads the SEC in assists, you don't do that be being an average PG IMO.
The SEC isn't the place to look for elite PGs this year.
Golden is averaging 4.6 A per game and his A/TO is 1.63.
He's gotten worse as the season has gone on.
He's 82 in the country in assists.
The elites PGs are at Iona and NC this year averaging 10 As per game and A/TOs at about 3 or better.
Don't get me wrong.I don't think golden will be elite let me be clear, I was just saying why I feel he's our guy, because ccm said that he feels he could be elite.
82nd is obviously the upper half of the country do he'd be better than average. He had a very bad 2 or 3 weeks, but the last 2 games have been much better, maybe that trend continues.
No need to grade him on a game to game basis, especially since he's a sophomore and still learning the position. IMO
If next year Stanton is a 7apg and 3:1 ast to ratio then I'm all for him starting and moving golden over. That's a very simple decision, it gets much more talent out on the floor, something were lacking right now.
But that's what I'm saying is I just don't see Stanton being that guy, and if he's not that means golden is. And if golden is that guy next year, I don't see him being moved his senior year for a freshman. JMO
Don't get me wrong.
I'm not one of the Golden bashers.
Kid's got a hard job with a lot of adjustments to be made to his game and has done a serviceable job this season.
