A U.S. Census worker has been found, hanged to death, in Clay County.
The FBI is investigating whether the death was caused by anti-government sentiment. The word "FED" was found scrawled across the man's chest.
The victim is 51-year-old Bill Sparkman, a teacher and part-time Census field worker. He was found September 12th, though the story was just coming to light almost two weeks later.
The Census Bureau has suspended door-to-door surveys in rural Clay County

Do they know yet whether he hung himself of someone hung him? Was he already dead from another cause before he was hung up? I'm sure the local authorities know all this but are playing it close to the vest until the investigation has a definite direction: suicide vs. homicide.

Considering the timing and the thing about FED being scrawled across his chest... I would think foul play was likely.

You would just have to be familiar with Clay County.
I am fairly familiar with the area. My oldest brother lived in Corbin for many years and we visited often.

When I first saw this story, I was not surprised.

Really, all of my family is from Bell County.

Do you know any Crawford's or Burke's?

The Lexington Herald Leader reported the following today...........

1. The body was found naked.

2. Hung from a tree in a cemetery.

3. Had socks on.

4. Mouth was gagged with a red rag.

5. Hands & wrists were bound by duct tape.

6. Feet bound by duct tape.

7. Eyes covered by duct tape.

8. Neck was bound by duct tape.

9. His I.D. tag was duct taped to the right side of his neck almost on his right shoulder.

10. Fed was written on his chest with what was likely a felt-tip pen.

Capt. Lisa Rudzinski says, "Authorities still haven't decided if this was a homicide, suicide, or an accident."

This seems like a no-brainer. :dunno:
