Because teams being ranked in or near the top 10 and not even making a bowl game at the end of the year (meaning in a time when there's oh so many bowl bids, they actually finished with a losing record) is much worse than finishing 8-4, maybe?

As disappointed as we are, I'm not even sure we're the biggest disappointment in the SEC. I'd probably give that to Ole Miss.
