Just caught the tail end of it but it was under the category of best hire and Tennessee was mentioned. Said it would take Butch a couple of years but he would turn Tennessee around. SIAP, just figured I'd mention it for those that didn't see it and is still all heart broken over Tee :)

From VanPelt to this, it seems ESPN is, dare I say it, impressed with the direction of the program. GBO!

I will say I have been very impressed with his outreach in his first week. He is letting the whole country know that things are about t change in Knoxville.

Thanks for the post! A little optimism goes a long way. "You are either a fountain or a drain!" I wish more fans would be fountains!

Not trying to be negative but this was the same stuff said when Dooley was hired.

Yes it was and they had him on their shows several times.

My hope this time we have a coach that understands he has to build relationships and be a real football coach - not a prima donna, BS'er. We have Hart to be the later.

But, but, but I thought that they would give us all kinds of bad press because Tee didn't want to come coach hear and that the sky is falling and that Butch is just another Dooley. I seen the college football live segment and they said Jones was the best hire yet and that says a lot imo.

Will the fans give CBJ the necessary time to turn things around? My guess is that many will be calling for him to be fired after his first loss.

I hate to be the bearer of obvious news, but our fans are not going to give Butch Jones a couple of years to turn it around. By the start of year three he will already be on the "hot seat." Here's how his career at Tennessee is going to play out:

In year one, our fans will be all fired up at the beginning of the season, stupidly predicting upsets over Oregon and SEC championships and the like. By the end of that disappointing season, which we would have had regardless of who was coaching, "VFL" fans and crappy sports radio hosts all over the state will be screaming bloody murder.

By his second season as coach, Butch will have amassed his supporters and his haters in equal proportions. Each side will cheer when he succeeds or gloat when he fails. Ultimately, since we'll still be in rebuilding mode, we will have the type of season that the experts predict, but not the type of season that our unrealistic fans expect, and people will start turning on Butch in greater numbers.

After his first loss in year 3, a vocal minority of fans will already be calling for Butch to be fired, and that minority will only continue to grow throughout the season. The bitterness of the rabble rabble will reach such proportions that, once we're clearly eliminated from SEC East contention, the players will simply give up on the season. We'll start losing to teams that have no business even being competitive with us, and the cries for Butch Jones to be fired will finally be too loud to ignore.

And then... ta da! We'll be right back where we are now. Actually, we'll be where we were about a month ago, with more completely unrealistic coaching expectations and a few extra "SoandSo isn't a true VFL!" posts sprinkled on top.

Unfortunately, I think Amsterdam is pretty accurate. The easy solution is to say the fans just need to be realistic and give CBJ some time to work. Otherwise, Jones just needs a really good class or a really good season to allow him that fourth year that he may need.
