CFN 2006 Vol Preview

Nothing really earth shattering there. The season is going to hinge on whether we can make enough throws and catches to keep the opposing defenses honest and keep our offense on the field.

a few quotes I liked from the articles:

"...things have to change in a big way this season of there will be a new coaching era beginning next year at this time."

I agree wholeheartedly with that sentiment.

"The season will be a success if ... The Vols win the SEC East. After last year, anything less than an appearance in the SEC title game will leave the sour taste of 2005 in everyone's mouth. The schedule, athleticism, and fire are all in place for a good season."

Amen. We all know that it will be impossible to win the East with more than two conference losses and it will be almost impossible if both of those losses are in the division. Can't loose to UF and UGA and consider it a successfulk turnaround.

"Key game: Sept. 2 vs. California. Cal has the talent to be a top 15 team and is more than good enough to beat the Vols in the season opener. Tennessee must win this game convincingly to get its confidence back, while a home loss would get everyone screaming for heads to roll."

Start winning right out of the gate or the villagers will be storming Neyland with pitchforks and torches by October.

"Expect a night-and-day turnaround with a speedy, veteran receiving corps, a talented workhorse running back in Arian Foster along with an inexperienced, but lightning fast group of reserves, and a huge line that should be rock solid despite the return of only one starter. The big question is at quarterback where Erik Ainge has to live up to the promise of a solid 2004 season and not play like the shaky sophomore he was last year."

I do expect the night and day turnaround. I think CFN is putting a lot on Ainge's shoulders throughout this article. EA will have to improve but IMO Cutcliffe will have him ready. The questions in my mind are: (1) will the coaches trust Ainge to check-off and make audibles at the line; and (2) will the play calling be creative enough to get the job done?

We all expect a little dip on defense. I don't expect to see us holding many teams to single digit scoring but I think they will be good enough to stop drives and create takeaways in sufficient numbers to win games if we can score points on O.

It also said this:

There's one factor that seemed to escape the discussion ...

Things weren't really that bad.

Of the six losses, the first was at Florida. No shame there. The second was against Georgia. Didn't the Dawgs win the SEC title? The third came on a few fluky late plays in a 6-3 heartbreaker at Alabama. What's wrong with that? The fourth was on a last-second field goal against South Carolina, and the fifth was against a Notre Dame team that played in the BCS. Yeah, losing at home to Vanderbilt is unacceptable, but by that point the team was so mentally beaten down after such a disappointing season that it was a shadow of its former self.

Sounds like the "Perfect Storm" comments that Phil got ripped for.

just to add to that...remember all the crazy breaks we got in 98? I mean we could have lost 3 of those games very easily...last year we didn't get any breaks, and that was a huge part of the problem. sometimes you just gotta get the breaks.

Is Jimmy Hyams now working for CFN? That article is pure Fulmer apologist blather. CFN has always been a second rate website, but this is a new low.

You make your own breaks.

 I was wondering how long it would take before somebody would rip that preview for not killing the coaching staff.

I was beginning to worry about you hate. I mean I agreed with you on several posts. But now I see you're back and better than ever.

Way to go Hillbilly. I knew that you could find the negative. Thanks for not letting us all down.

the article looked like a conglomoration of posts from this thread...everyone can see thier point of view in that piece.

...it did seem to put a lot on EA, and rightfully so, but i kept seeing things like "SHOULD have a break out year" and that the receivers are "NFL caliber". And that the O Line was Huge and should be strong??? what spring did he watch? the O Line is the biggest question....followed directly and closely by EA. and i'd like to see a lot of those when's and should's be translated in to if's and could's.

I don't know about all that.....I didn't learn anything new from that, o/t than i think CFBnews is hands down the biggest fence riding website out there.

For the season to be considered a success, we have to win the East? are you kidding me? And you know, it'll be the same assessment for UGA, UF and USC as well. Gimmie a break. and their projection has us at 9-2....uh, which game did they not have us playing next season? i think it was Air Force.

...it looked like a book report, pandering to every point of view a TN fan could possibly have....ridiculous.

on one hand, it totally defended the "perfect storm" scenario, and then two paragraphs later, it says the coach will be gone after next season if there's no improvement....way to pick a stance!!!

Anybody look at the offensive starting projections? Michael Frogg at center????? What happened to the McNeil(I think that was his name) guy that we recruited... The offensive line and the linebackers are the areas that scare me the most. We lost alot of expereince in these two areas.

Thanks for finally admitting that you care more about retaining Fulmer than you do about the success of the program.

OK hillbilly. Show me where I said that retaining anyone is more important. Go ahead and show me. You can't because all I did was show that you look for the negative in anything UT.

It is a reasonable inference from your assertion that it is "negative" to say there will be a new coaching regime without bigtime improvement. Based on you statement, you think it is postive to stay with what we've got with little or no improvement. I think I'll get some back-up on this one.

I agree on this point. Its great to have skill players that are speedburners and consistant, but if the big men on the Offensive Line arent gettin it done, its hard to move the chains. IMO the #1 factor for the Vols this upcoming season with Ainge being retooled, the wr's reloading with catch confidence, and a solid RB group is 'will we have an o-line that performs? Or will Ainge and Foster be looking at a team photo of the opponent on every snap? In the SEC its all about moving the chains, take what they give you and be patient...move the chains and the victories will come.
