Request: If you don't place validity in preseason polls, please just skip this thread.

CFN has chosen their preseason picks 11-119 and we're not in it, so it appears we'll be in their top 10.

Now, I know some here will rant about the validity of preseason polls, but yet they'll read this thread and make much of it anyway. Go figure.

Last year's preseason polls had USC and Texas 1-2 all year and they ended up in the NCGame.

So, just as there's some validity to recruiting rankings, there is some validity to preseason rankings. They're not science, but they're not garbage either.

I think it is a very reasonable goal for us to attain.

Very funny!

I'm with 2345, I'm curious about their write-up and am anxious to see their reasons.

Having 2 top 5 and 1 top 10 class in the last 3 years and the return of one of the greatest offensive minds in college ball might have something to do with it.

Now, cowboy up freak!!

Yeah I've seen a couple preseason polls that have UF as high as 5...dont buy it considering the tough road schedule next yr..I'd be happy with another 9-3 yr.

Any top SEC team who goes 11-1 or 12-0 is going to have Mr. Luck on their side. But, someone could do it and it may as well be us or the Gators.

This is the time to be hopeful.

Optimists live longer. :biggrin2:

No, I agree. It will be interesting to see their write up.

I don't think we'll be ranked that high in the Coach's Poll, which is actually the only poll that matters now. I do believe top 10 is an achievable goal though.

I'm still not certain what the AP was thinking by removing themselves from a formula that made them credible. Their poll is now no more important than one you or I would come up with.

From what our local AP voter - talk radio guru and reporter Joe Biddle - has said the AP seems to think that is has more credibility based on the knowledge of its members than the BCS formula. I think the AP is looking for reasons to have more 2003 split national championships. I don't know if the ultimate aim is to try and force the NCAA to develop a playoff or to create controversy. Either way you're bound to sell more papers.

this is an easy one HB...who gets PAID to write about CFB? What better subject matter is there to write about than a defunct championship series?

they knew exactly what they were doing.... :wink2:

The only problem with their strategy is; if we see 2 or 3 more years where 2 teams are the consensus top 2, the AP will soon lose any claim to relevancy.

Also, if you look at the ratings between Joe's show and the Sports Zone, you'll see Joe's not even relevant in his own city.

No credence with preseason polls. Remember last year. Preseason #3. It's nice to be loved though.

Absolutely, it's a little positive publicity. Can't hurt unless the players begin to believe it. I don't think that'll be a problem this year with Cut in the house.

How could a credible site like CFN put us there? I thought we have been told by our own fans that "no one respects CPF" and that "We have become a laughing stock"? The fact is that those who know football know that this season was an aboration. It will not happen again. We will have a very good year!

Good thoughts. We've had our one really bad year per quarter century. Now that we've got that out of the way, we need to get back to the business of competing for championships.

And regardless of what the negatroids say, we have never quit competing for championships. Since the SEC went to divisional play this is how many times each school has played in and won an SEC Championship, and how long it's been since each has been.

FL 7 winning 5 - 5 years since going
Bama 5 winning 2 - 6 years since going
Vols 4 winning 2 - 1 year since going
GA 3 winning 2 - Played This Year
LSU 3 winning 1 -Played This Year
Auburn 3 winning 1 - 1 year since going
Arkansas 2 winning none - 3 years since going
Mississippi St. 1 winning none - 8 years since going

We're only 1 year away from competing for an SEC Crown and we'll be right back in the thick of it in 06.

Don't forget, there are only 8 teams on that list... meaning the other 4 have NEVER been in the Champ Game. USC, Vandy, UK, and Ole Miss.

I don't know about CollegeFootballNews.com being a very credible site. I think it is a very interesting site, and I enjoy perusing the articles, but (like tricitiessports.com) they are pretty far off on a lot of their predictions. I believe last year they picked us to go undefeated except for LSU. I also got really sick of hearing about how all USC's opponents had such a great shot at victory last year. They'd always pick someone like Washington, WSU, or UCLA to take down USC, and of course the Trojans always won a blowout. I'm glad they think highly of us next year, but it doesn't really boost my confidence.

Stuff like this kills credibility.

Of course, ESPN does dumb stuff like this all the time, and they never seem to lose any.
