CFN Will Have Us In Their Preseason Top 10 Tomorrow

i just dont see us as a top 10 team to start off the year, id much rather UT go under the radar next season cuz we all know wat happened when we started off #3.

no way we are in the top 10. in the sec alone you have florida, georgia, lsu, auburn , and maybe SC all ranked ahead of us. we will be hard pressed to be ranked at all.

CFN is going on how they think things will be at the end of the season... their preseason stuff is always off kilter from reality, but somehow they get a lot of things correct by the end of the year...

Another thing for fans like us to talk about. Stuff to chew on. Can't wait until its FOOTBALL TIME IN TENNESSEE again.

Who the heck is Kevin Smith and when did he play LB for us???? Oh yeah now I get it these guys don't have a clue what they are talking about and since they couldn't remember the last name SIMON they used the most used last name in the world.....hmmmm me thinks they need lay off the crack

Looks like they already fixed the goofs.

And, as for me, #9 looks pretty nice through these orange-tinted shades. It's getting warm in here with this thick, wooly coat, I know. . . .but, have a glass of Kool-Aid and enjoy the party.

GO VOLS.

I don't know about CollegeFootballNews.com being a very credible site. I think it is a very interesting site, and I enjoy perusing the articles, but (like tricitiessports.com) they are pretty far off on a lot of their predictions. I believe last year they picked us to go undefeated except for LSU. I also got really sick of hearing about how all USC's opponents had such a great shot at victory last year. They'd always pick someone like Washington, WSU, or UCLA to take down USC, and of course the Trojans always won a blowout. I'm glad they think highly of us next year, but it doesn't really boost my confidence.

Last year they predicted USC and Texas in the Rose Bowl. Most had UT very high and all that I can think of had us top 10. Us blowing it does not take away there cred. USC was challenged a couple of games.
Outside of VOLNATION.com I think it is one of the very best football sites.

I think talent is there but we have to earn our way back to the top 10 on the field and not CFN preseason polls. This is nice but premature. Having said that, Cut will make a difference it doesn't surprise to read what CFN wrote about UT. Just hope it isn't a jinx like last year.

Pre-preseason rankings are what they are, something to talk about. That's about it.

And guess what they've accomplished? We're talking about it. Not only are we talking rankings, but we're talking about CFN.

All preseason rankings are guesses. Some are educated guesses and some are just shots in the dark. Everything pointed to us being very good last year. It was not only CFN but everyone had us highly ranked.

The same reasons we were highly regarded last year are all in place, plus a very much upgraded offensive staff.

So, we can be optimistic if we want. We can also take the approach, "I'll believe it when I see it."

I'd rather believe in the positive.

Go Vols!

yeah, the write up they put in there, basically said it...lots of if's....can EA bounce back and get back to the form we saw as a freshman? is Cut going to make that much a difference that quickly? etc.....

the ranking is based on the answers to those questions being yes. obviously, time will tell, and the answers to the questions will be debated for the next 8 months, until we something on the feild. but for now, i'll take it. From an objective point of view, being CFN, it's nice to know that others still see UT for what is, and based on that, the assumption being that we'll be back sooner than later....

it'll be fun...Go Vols

I dont think that we will be that much different from last year. The one thing I am waiting for is to hear about the off the field incedences. If they are controlled, and we show discipline, I think we still have enough returning talent and with the addition of last years #1 recruiting class that the only difference will be winning those close games. If you really look at last season, we didnt get blown out of many games, and could have won quite a few more than our record indicated. Every year there is a team that just does not get it done, last year it was us. I think that was helped by us not having any discipline. I dont think Cutcliffe will be able to change that much, but with Foster having another year under his belt and maybe a little quarterback help with coach cutcliffe we go 11-1 with sec championship. We go back to running the ball, get the o-line back to Vol standards, keep the defense close to last years level and it could be fiesta time. Last year was just one of those years where the chips fell in someone elses pocket. Look for Georgia and South Carolina to be down. The one game I worry about is a late season match up with the hogs, great running, promising returning qb(casey dick competing with mustain) and they always seem to step up against TN for whatever reason and we always tend to overlook them. We left that last series on a winning note and they have not forgot about that. Just my opinion. GO VOLS

I agree with the entire post...but this one...well, this would fall in the category of no news is good news...so the less we hear, the better off we are.

So here's to NOT hearing anything about off the feild incidents.... :cross:

Go Vols.

I think your right on a lot of issues. I think the Hog game will be good too. They for some reason absolutely hate UT! I don't know if it is that they used to hate Texas and they wear Orange (albiet an ugly shade) or because we own them in the series or the Stoerner Fumble in 98. But make no mistake they hate us.

#9 is way too high. who is on this panel. it is hard for me to believe anybody in there right mind would have us rated that high. this is the same team that had the greatest talent last year than any other tennessee team ever and finished 5-6. i think the AP and coaches are smarter than this in the fall.

nobody's arguing that point smoke, it's just based on what someone thinks, based on the answers to some very serious questions being "yes". those questions haven't been answered, but taking all things in to consideration, the person or peopel that put this together on CFN, think the pieces are there for the answers to be "yes" in the fall.

I don't think anyone on this board would ever say, right now, that we are even a top 25 team...much less top 10....but it is good for discussion, right?

Would anyone be all that suprised if we finished next season in the top 10? yes, maybe a bit more than usual, but in the end, we are capable of being top 10 NEXT year, just not at the beginning of the year...

I agree that we need to play our way back to respectability, but I also think it's reasonable to expect that we could be in the final top 10 poll next year.

The results will be in the games. That's why we play them.

Many of the CFN writers are AP voters there smoke! The big difference is that they (despite what some on here claim) actually do think CPF is a very good coach and respect him and our program. What they put out is how they think it will finish. They usually do a very good job in picking. UT and Notre Dame were the two big surprises last year. If you remember the AP and Coaches had us very high last year as well. But CFN takes the emotion out and pick on facts that they believe. They just don't share your hatred for CPF.

The other surprise was Texas A&M. Some would argue they were a bigger flop than the Vols... I don't think they were THAT bad, but they had a similar bad season, when they were picked to do well.

Well seeing how some on here don't think they are a big program I don't think they should be expected to do well.
But since I don't know much about football I will agree with you that ATM was a big disapointment.

Anyone who doesn't think that A&M is a big program needs to get their history books out... they're a more successful South Carolina, pretty much. Point being, they were a top 10 pick at the beginning of last season just like we were.

Granted, they were comming off a bowl shellacking, and we were on the giving end of that... but that obviously didn't change the outcome of our season any.

Took forever for the linked page to come up, so for those wanting to read what it says without waiting....

9. Tennessee 2005 Record: 5-6
Why Tennessee could be the Pre-preseason No. 1: After being 2005’s biggest disappointment, there’s enough talent coming back to hope for a tremendous rebound. The addition of David Cutcliffe as the new offensive coordinator should be the shot in the arm needed to get the passing game going, while Arian Foster appears to be Tennessee’s next NFL great running back. The offensive line, in time, should be fine led by All-America-in-waiting Arron Sears at tackle. NFL ready defensive tackles Justin Harrell and Turk McBride also decided to come back for their senior seasons.
Why Tennessee isn’t the Pre-preseason No. 1: Is Erik Ainge ready to play up to his talent level? With a million-dollar arm and next level skills, Ainge has shown signs of being a star quarterback, but he hasn’t been consistent and hasn’t shown he can lead the team to big wins. The defense loses its top two tacklers, LBs Kevin Simon and Omar Gaither.
What Tennessee needs to do to get to the BCS Championship Bowl: Play like the NFL farm club it is. Few teams can touch the Vols on straight athleticism and next-level caliber talent, so now it’s up to the coaching staff to prove that last year was a total fluke. Playing in the SEC, the intensity level has to be there each and every week. Cal, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, LSU and Arkansas are all on the schedule and all will spend time in the top 25, if not the top 15.
Realistic, feet-on-the-ground, goal to shoot for: SEC champions. The road schedule, considering Tennessee plays in the SEC, isn’t that bad with one killer (at Georgia), two nasty battles (at South Carolina and at Arkansas), and two games that have to be layups if this is a BCS caliber team (at Memphis, at Vanderbilt). This is too tough a schedule to get through unscathed, but 11-1 and an appearance in the SEC championship game would keep it in the BCS Championship Bowl hunt.
The number one thing to work on is: Hanging on to the ball. The addition of “Coach Cut” will turn around the offense, but the Vols can’t win the SEC unless they improve their turnover margin after finishing 95th in the nation by giving it away 27 times with only 20 takeaways.
Biggest offensive loss: QB Rick Clausen
Biggest defensive loss: DT Jesse Mahelona
