Can you name some coaches that failed at a tier 1 level who had previously been able to check the box, "highly successful" at both tier 3 (c mich) and tier 2(cincy) before moving up? This reminds me of the career path of urban meyer (bgreen-utah-fla) or brian kelly obviously. Good grief our last hire couldn't even check the "successful" box at tier 3.
Now some will say he is piggybacking on things that kelly built but no one ever denegrated kelly's 11-0 team because dantanio had recruited those players. And they lost a lot of talent to the nfl, slipped to 4-8 and he then REBUILT that team to 10-3/9-3 seasons. Unless you are an outstanding coach you will not keep it rolling. There are many examples of this. Ask Ellis Johnson at SMiss how easy the piggybacking program is.
The Bearcats have also in 2011 and 2012 put back to back their best recruiting years ever so obviously the guy can recruit. Hard to see what's not to like here, and also hard to understand the logic that ANY nfl coach is a better choice. Folks the nfl and college are 2 different sports...that's why although it's been tried a gazillion times and will ignorantly be tried a gazillion more, the big successes of college coaches to the nfl or vice versa are rare as hen's teeth.
Just a great hire f ut and can't wait to see what he can accomplish.
