Charles is a class act and is a great ambassador for both UT and college football in general. Would love to see him in the UT Athletic Administration one day.

It should be noted that Chaz was the first to go full Butch and publicly endorse this hire. The week CBJ was hired and everyone was trying to gauge the decision, Chaz was on the radio raving about Butch. This guy is a 1st class alum and great advocate for all things UT.

I'd be good with that. Awesome guy.

It would be a step down in salary and prestige, given his current assignment as network analyst and occasional color commentator, but I would love to see Charles replace Bob Kesling. The sooner, the better.

But, but.....Kesling is a VFL, and stayed in Knoxville to live after graduation. Davis abandoned us.

It'll never happen, but I'd love to see CD become the next "voice of the Vols".

Excellent question, one for which I certainly cannot provide a definitive answer. However, sifting through the catacombs of my memory, I will say that, historically, many of the people referred to as "color commentators" were more colorful characters, as opposed to the spit-and-polish delivery of professional broadcasters. Persons who come to mind who fit this description would include Dizzy Dean, "Dandy Don" Meredith, and John Madden.

Bob had the misfortune of succeeding a legend, but his style, by comparison, comes across as dry as the Sahara.
Kesling is a former Vol walk-on fullback, but I can't stand to listen to him. I really didn't like to listen to Ward either. He was a bit much, but I guess that he did make it exciting.

Wait. Wait. Wait . You didn t like listening to Ward ? My greatest childhood memories are the night games before cable or satellite tv listening to him paint such a vivid picture in my mind of what was happening. I' m sorry you didn't t get what I got from him you truly missed out.

The one thing that always struck me as funny about John's broadcast style was that, as a fan, you knew, by virtue of the crowd roar, the outcome of a long scoring play about five seconds before he verbally got the running back or receiver into the end zone: "He's to the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Give him six, touchdown Tennessee."

Bob's "he's into the checkerboards" really pales by comparison with that trademark call.

John was the voice all things great about UT. Bob-well-cold oatmeal for breakfast.

Why do they call them "color commentators"?

to provide "color to the play by play announcer" but i think you all ready knew that :)

and this part was interesting too

"You know the Tennessee football program is united when Johnny Majors and Phillip Fulmer have been to practices together."

now that is amazing

I think he started doing basketball at U.T. when I was in high school, and football after I got to U.T. After about 30 years of the same schtick, it got a bit stale.
