Kentucky has used a checkerboard design in some way or another in their football and basketball uniforms during the last few seasons. It doesn't really bother me but I am curious why it has been a consistent thing that they're using. Anyone know the story?

They need to have checkerboard on them. We've been in there endzone enough over the past 30 years that they probably felt it was appropriate!

Fresno State also has checkerboard end zones.

Yes but Kentucky considers us rivals and they have only started doing it recently. I know we don't own the checkerboard pattern but it just seems strange that Kentucky would even want to use it.

A craze made popular by Bob K... "Into the Cheggerboards". Very hot right now.

The checkerboard design pays homage to the state’s racing tradition and the colors Secretariat wore:

Also, it gives Nike something else to trademark and take with them when the school changes equipment companies (c.f. Michigan’s Blue and School Bus Yellow).

I think we started using the checkerboard in basketball when Billy Clyde first came here.
