Cheney on gay marriage: 'Freedom for everyone' | Comcast.net

It'd be easy to dismiss this based on his family situation, but I think Cheney probably is much closer to a Goldwater Republican (small, efficient government + personal freedom coupled with an equal measure of personal responsibility) than many people give him credit for. I don't know where the Republican party is headed? You've got the Huckabean culture warriors on one side and the race to the middle people represented by Romney and alot of sitting Republican Senators who need to make deals to preserve a spot at the trough. I think the western strain of rugged individualists may be a dying breed and it saddens me because those are about the only politicians whose message has resonated with me since I was old enough to vote.

The purely small government Republican a la Ronald Reagan is indeed a dying breed. They have been completely overtaken by the morality/values-based right wingers. Not only do the religious-based conservatives place minimal value on small government -- they actually believe in government running our lives in a manner consistent with their view of life, religion, and politics.

Ironic that a party that once valued the smallest role of government possible is now dominated by those who would use every branch to tell parents how to raise their kids, tell a state what it can and can't do with Terry Schiavo, etc.

It is an inherent and irreconcilable conflict that we see rising again and leaving the party shrill even within its own ranks.

I must have been asleep for about 8 years. What libertarian stance did Cheney take that puts him in the same sentence with Barry Goldwater?

So the state has the power to determine who lives and who dies?
