Oh, too bad...

Virginia starting defensive end Chico Bennett Jr. will miss the season opener against Tennessee on Saturday with a knee injury, coach Tony Elliott said Tuesday.

Elliott told reporters during his weekly news conference that the Cavaliers are hopeful Bennett will return next week against James Madison.

Bennett, the team's best pass-rusher, sustained a noncontact knee injury during a preseason scrimmage two weeks ago. Elliott said Bennett had surgery to remove loose bone fragments that caused swelling in the knee.

"He was pushing for this week," Elliott said. "It was a big scare for all of us. We're very fortunate that it was a situation where it was a minor procedure. He's walking good, so I'm anticipating next week is realistic for him."

Elliott also said starting safety Antonio Clary is a game-time decision with a high ankle sprain

Injuries are a big part of football. Hopefully they can heal and help VA win some games in the near future.
Agree. I always hate injuries for every kid. However, at least at this point, it'll be good for our OL to not have to scheme against a beast right off the bat in the season opener, and still get a good P5 talent push before playing a cream puff next week.

I was kinda hoping they would have to face him, just to see how Campbell or Crawford handle it. But it is a lucky break for the O.

Probably knows they're getting skull dragged and saving him for the big game vs James Madison

I don't think so. When Milton trucks a defender on his runs, I imagine some snot and blood getting on his jersey.
you make a very good point sir.. that being said this is Virginia so its likely mostly his ankles get dirty from their butterfingers

Didn't realize until yesterday's 247 podcast that he's a grad of my alma mater, BGA. Kid was going to be playing in front of his home folks. Too bad for him.

Also, how did Pruitt let him get away? Oh, right...Tennessee kids can't play, according to JP.
