BBC News - China military budget tops $100bn

Will go over the billion dollar mark for the first time as well. I'm interested in seeing how they will use the ex-Soviet carrier Varyag. From what I understand it will be purely a training ship. It is expected to be handed over to the PLAN sometime this year.

My bet would be they will use it primarily as a training tool for their sub fleet.

I thought I had read that they were building at least two new carriers.

The truth is that we don't really know what they spend on their military, they have no FOIA or such.

Interesting as I'm currently reading Clancy's The Bear and the Dragon. China's defense spending is a big player in the plotline.
