I don't think I've seen Chism and Crews on the court at the same time yet this season. Wouldn't it have helped UT against UNC to defend Hansbrough and Wright? Here's what Chism had to say about it:

"I wish me and Duke were in there together playing against them," said Chism, who was 3-of-4 from 3-point range and had 12 points. "Then it would have been harder for them, and we wouldn't have had to leave our four man on an island like that."

Should Coach Pearl think long and hard about playing the two at the same time against bigger teams? Maybe even starting them both?

Maybe Chism should think long and hard about hitting some free throws and figuring out how to get a good look inside the 3-point arc.

It might have helped a little, but I don't think the outcome would have been any different. I know its early but these Frosh have not been that impressive to me. Of all of them, Chism has looked the best, but neither he or Crews seem to have any touch around the rim. R. Smith is a turnover waiting to happen every time down the court. I guess this is what we have to expect with playing so many Frosh. Just hope Coach Pearl can coach 'em up for the SEC schedule.

I realize Chism could perform better offensively, but his defensive presence (with Crews on the floor at the same time) could've helped against a bigger UNC team. That's all I'm saying.

Interesting... although I don't think it would've mattered who they had on Hansbrough and Wright. It seemed like Dane Bradshaw was trying to guard them more than anyone...

You're right, it wouldn't have mattered all that much. Maybe they could've slowed UNC's frontcourt down a little bit. Dane Bradshaw played his tail off. The freshmen need to be watching his effort and taking notes.

In other news, the vast improvement of Ryan Childress seems to only apply when playing the likes of MTSU and Coppin State.

Thus far our freshman haven't lived up to their top 10 billing. I agree with KiddieDoc 100%, Chism (and Crews IMO) need to hit FTs and figure out how to get more inside looks - and then capitalize when they get them. And Ramar Smith, seems like 90% of his shots are out of control runners... Anyway, I think we'll see lots of improvement over the course of the year. On a positive note, looks like Butler could actually be the real deal... and we know UNC will be good, so there's no huge shame in getting roughed up with such a young team.

I don't think it would of mattered that much if Crews and Chism were on the court together or not. I personally think it has been a good idea to rotate the two at the 5 spot. They have been very well rested and allows us to get the most out of each player. Plus, Dane has done a great job defending the 4 spot in the past. If Childress could step it up on defense this might not be an issue.

I think it would be very interesting to see them play together at some point in the season - maybe they'll get to later. ??

That being said, though, I have faith in Coach Pearl and his system and how he wants to get things done. I just hope that the team shows improvement throughout the year, and that by year's end we can gel and we are a solid team. With the depth that we have, the team shouldn't hit a wall at the end of the year like last year's team seemed to do. We just have to hope that we can win enough games between now and the end of the year to be a tourney team, and we'll see.

As far as the other freshmen go, it looks like to me that Josh Tabb may have been the most ready to contribute immediately and he came in as the least thought-of of the five. :dunno:

I do not think we will see them both on the court much at the same time this season. Depth behind those two is very very weak. If you play them both at the same time then they will both have to come out around the same time and then we would be extremely weak down low while they were on the bench.

One chink in Bruce's armor is nobody seems to be able to play with their backs to the basket! Too many missed give me shots, this year and last!

i think pearl should at least be able to work it where they are both on the court for ten minutes a game. Surely they can average more than just 20 minutes a game?

And how many people said last week, "who needs Major Wingate"?????? Wingate wasn't the best player out there but he is a post player. He played very well against Florida last year.

Oh and all of the Vols need to be better at free throws. They only hit 50%, if they would have hit say 70%, it would have been a 7 or 8 point game.

However, the Vols only 11 turnovers which was much better.

Wingate would be a huge help in a number of ways:

1. Experience inside
2. Bradshaw gets to play a position suited for him(3)
3. Crews gets to play a position suited for him(4)
4. Chism and Crews could see the court together
5. Decent defense(especially inbounding)
6. An easy scapegoat

The game is a little too fast for the freshman right now. In time the game will slow down to a speed they can handle, maybe not this year but it will slow down and they will be great. Also its ok too second guess what should be done, however we have one great coach and in time, what he is doing and the progress we make will be worth the losses we are getting now.:eek:k:

i didnt think chism and crews would be superstars this year. wait until they are juniors and pearl recruits two more solid classes. then we will be poised for a run. last years seniors were huge in making that team what it was, this years freshmen will be huge in making the program what it will be. this year will be tough to watch but we will get experience for our new point guard and big men.

Jimmy Hyams (sp) said the other day the reason was that Pearl did not want Chism/Crews to learn two positions at the same time. He felt it would be better for them to get down playing center, and after that teach them to play the 4 position. I feel that closer to SEC play and Tournament play they should have time to learn both positions and be able to be on the court at the same time.
