Chris Brown's mother was just on the radio and stated that from a parents view point there is indeed no discipline in this PROGRAM! No big secret, I know. But if we lose parents thats a whole different animal. Fulmer had better get into damage control mode, fast. Not only must he recruit new players but he must also re recruit the ones he has left and sell them on his message. Whatever that is!

Very interesting and not a surprise! I think it is quite evident that the program lacks discipline, structure, preparation, etc etc etc.
Good for her for coming forth! I am sure the parents of these kids are just as unhappy and even more so as the rest of the fans!

It's telling us what we already know. The problem I have is that nothing seems to be changing...for the better at least. The players' attitudes are getting worse and Fulmer's soundbites are more in the same.

I agree with your comments, CD, but as a teacher, I would remind everybody that most of these players are at least 18 and, therefore, in the majority. They can sign legal contracts and make their own decisions. Furthermore, while I assume that Brown's mother refers to "team discipline," it's not as though players come to Knoxville as eggs and are totally hatched and raised by the coaching staff. It's apparent to me that they don't have any self-discipline, and the Mrs. Browns of the world can, in large part, thank themselves for that.

I'd agree in part, but only a small part.

First, even non top-jock American kids are that mature at 18 compared to the European ones I've known. Pretty far from it- and our system (whatever we say) doesn't encourage them to be.

The top-jock culture encourages/ tempts them worse than anything most of us would know beyond that, and then you've got to add in "the sum is greater than its parts" (bunch of tempted top-jocks grouped together).

Then, finally, you're gathering all those marginally mature, monstrously and constantly tempted kids together in a place far from home- at least far enough so whatever disciplinary figures they've had up til that point only know as much as you let them.

I couldn't tell you some of the things I did the school I went my first two years (not all the statutes of limitation have run) and I was going to a school 2 miles from home wasn't getting the top-jock treatment.

Parents have to make a good start on them, but we put top-jocks in extreme and special circumstances. They need disciplinary support from their program BAD, and that's why its an assumed part of the job. Without it, no matter how well the parents have done, even good kids can go bad. Basically, sociologically, a few bad apples can spoil the bunch- if the guy in charge of the apples doesn't know enough to do something about the bad ones first.

Then why and how does it work at some of the other schools?

:dunno:

I am also a teacher, but I believe these kids need to be held accountable for their actions and therefore be punished in an "effective" way that will help themselves develop discipline. The last time I checked, 18 years old was considered a legal adult in the legal system. A little "slap on the wrist" just hasn't cut it. I am near retirement and have seen even our educational system get weak with curriculum and discipline. Our so called educational psychologists have warned us not to "destroy" our kids "individuality" and "self-confidence" using the harsher and outdated means of punishment. Oh how things have changed, and not necessarily for the better.

I totally agree, SFC. And I acknowledge that it's part of the coaching staff's job to keep them in line when they arrive at UT. They haven't done that part, and I know it. As to "preserving self esteem"...I'm sick of it, too. I'd rather cut PF's hands off at the wrists than seem him clapping when they screw up.

I don't know...something about one more parent blaming her kid's shortcomings on the school rubs me the wrong way. Put it down to the job, I reckon.

Chris Brown's mom is a great person.

I have had the pleasure of meeting her and Chris while they were at Jesuit HS in New Orleans

Fulmer's strong point has always been winning over the parents of recruits. If he has lost the parents of active players. HE HAS LOST FACE with future ones!

yes these guys are legally adults and they are responsible for their actions. But the coaches are responsible as well. The players will do what they are allowed to do. Coaches instill discipline and clamp down on illegal, unethical, and questionable behavior on all aspects. Colorado just had that problem. So have a few other universities. But their coaches stepped up and held them accountable. The coaches tightened the leashes and cracked down on the problem kids. It goes both ways. They are kids and adults. They are all on the edge of both worlds and it is the coach's job to maintain focus on these players. It works for the 18 year olds in the military dying for their country as well.
