I think we need to break from Pat's tree and go after one of Geno's pupils, say Chris Dailey. Don't like the guy but he demands excellence and his record and teams speak for themselves.

Wish we had tried that in football, with some disciple of say Saban or Carroll. Guys with multiple National Titles and dominant programs. Had we done so, we wouldn't have had such a horrible run after Fulmer.

I think her and Geno are a pair. If you want someone from UCONN, you'd probably need to go after the two assistant coaches.

I don't see it happening, but I'd love to see Tennessee go after Shea Ralph. She seems to have a great head on her shoulders while being incredibly feisty and intense. She has also has said some really great things about Pat/Tennessee and is a proven winner.

Tops on my wish list are Scott Rueck, Sue Semrau, Stephanie White who coaches the Fever or even Goestenkors who was a heck of a coach at Duke. The only one that seems somewhat realistic is Rueck, but if Tennessee could lure one of those coaches to Knoxville, I think the program could do a 180.

There is a reason Dailey has been an assistant coach for all these years. She certainly has had chances to coach in the past.

Sounds like an assistant Pat used to have named Holly. You know how that move turned out when she finally took over the reins.

Get someone with head coaching experience!!!!

We already tried hiring the assistant coach to a legend. You always want to hire someone who has already proven they can get the job done as a head coach. I would take someone who has torn it up at a lower conference before I would hire an assistant.

The only skill we know Dailey has for sure is that she can hold Geno back when he gets fired up at the refs. For all we know that might her only function on the staff.

Lol, my dad and I have been saying this for years. We call Daily the Hold Back coach, for Geno. But, I don't think she would offer much as a head coach

Anybody leaving UCONN for Tennessee would be the most complete betrayal to Geno. Mark my words, no UCONN affiliated person will touch us as long as Geno is alive. He would never allow it.
NEVER!

Be careful looking at longtime assistants under great coaches. Look HW, look at Calder at UNC. Great assistants but not great HCs.

Team needs a HC with experience, a system, and a no nonsense attitude that will kick butt, teach and coach x's and o's like not leaving a 57% FT shooter on the floor in must foul situation or burning timeouts late when you are up just to get the ball to half-court only to have the opponent foul you anyway...

Not an assistant but an associate head coach. Daily will never leave UConn. Chris Daily

Restraining a coach with the temper Auriemma had in earlier days is not insignificant - saved a lot of technicals.

But if you read the link Brassie provides on page 2, you'll see that Dailey has a much more integral role to play. And truthfully, based on snippets of video I've seen of UConn practices, I think the article doesn't really do justice because it doesn't touch on some of the fundamentals she teaches on the court.

This is spot on. The system we run puts us at a disadvantage. You have to teach how to make a pass, what angles to use, when NOT to pass, what sort of pass to make, what sort of spacing to have, how to move to come free etc... Every aspect of the game is taught down to the finest of details and honed so that it becomes second nature. Everyone knows their roles and the coach can concentrate on managing the game.

When it comes to this there is Geno and then there is everyone else.

The Lady Vols lack the fundamentals of basketball. This is evident when you look at the high percentage of turnovers, poor shooting percentages, and decision making skills on the court. DD carried the Lady Tar Heels to the Elite 8 under Hatchell's assistant, but cannot start for the Lady Vols?????

Try Tonya Cardoza, head coach from Temple. She played at Virginia with Dawn Staley and was assistant coach at UCONN for 14 years. She took the Temple job when Staley left. Her players love her and she has .620% winning percentage with limited resources. She might be someone to consider.

Kevin Borseth from Green Bay would be an excellent choice. I also like Jim Jabor from Dayton. They usually give UConn a good game. Those two gentlemen seem to take local talent and develop them into better players. It also helps that they're already team oriented players out of high school. These are the type of ladies that they recruit.

Tony's suggestion is interesting. Not only because Cardoza has impressive credentials, but because she has ties to two programs hated by Pat (remember when she threatened the pilots if they put the plane down in VA when she was in labor with Tyler?).

Seriously, though, here is an interesting quote from the wiki link on Cardoza:

Cardoza found that the role of head coach was very different than that of an assistant. When she was an assistant, she did have things to worry about but she felt she could step away. As a head coach, she doesn't have that luxury. When she was an assistant, she prided herself on being a players coach, and thought she could always do that, but she has found that the relationship of a head coach to the players is different.

You look for someone who's built an very good program from nothing in recent years--whether mid-major or major, won some NCAA tourney games, has some charisma (VERY important) and is considered both smart and tough. A take-charge type who has a system that works.

Here's what I'd do in a perfect world: I'd ask Muffet McGraw what three upcoming coaches have most impressed her. I want a somewhat younger version of Muffet McGraw--who built ND program, who has a system that works extremely well both with or without great players, and who schools us every time we play her team.
