Chris Simms admits taking money to attend Texas

I didn't follow recruiting very much back then, but didn't we also back off on Eli Manning after Simms commitment?

We never really had a chance at Eli. After Cutcliffe became the head coach at Ole Miss, he was pretty much 100% on board with playing at his father's alma matter from that point onwards.

Also, they were different years. Simms was the recruiting class of 1999. Eli was the recruiting class of 2000.

Eli was class of '99. He redshirted his freshman year.

Makes sense.

Why would Simms need money?

Good question. Sounds like in his case he probably took money not because he needed it, but the booster felt he should give him money as a way of saying thanks, so he took it. For others they may expect it more often and more money too.

Sounds like you are making an excuse for him taking the money.
Kinda like saying I lied but it was a little white lie.

Him being well off makes it worse to me.

No, did not mean it that way, just the way I thought it was. If you ask me, I think it's pretty bad of the "donor" to take advantage of him. He made good money on those autographs. Imo, even if we disagree with the NCAA rules, play by them. I know that is not reality, just my opinion. I have not had that temptation though so...
