Hooray for government and public sector unions.
No city manager's worth $800K | city, council, bell - Opinion - The Orange County Register
This might not sound like a lot to you but Bell is one of the poorest cities in L.A. County. U.S. Census data from the year 2000 puts Bell's per-capita income at $9,905 while the Los Angeles Almanac more recently estimates it at above $12,000
The Los Angeles Times reported last week that the city manager of Bell, Robert Rizzo, receives a salary of $787,637 as the top bureaucrat in a city of about 38,000 residents, mostly Latinos. Bell's Police Chief Randy Adams makes $457,000 a year while Assistant City Manager Angela Spaccia gets $376,288.

A state law enacted in 2005 limits the pay of council members in "general law" cities, a category that includes most cities in Southern California. That law was passed in reaction to the high salaries that leaders in South Gate had bestowed on themselves earlier in the decade.
But the year that law passed, the Bell City Council authorized a special election with only one item on the ballot — a measure calling for Bell to convert to a "charter" city. The move was billed as one that would give the city more local control. The ballot language included no mention of the effect the change would have on council members' salaries.
Party affilitation has nothing to do with this. Its outrageous, no matter and invoking it needlessly distracts from the point.
