CKC 8/29 presser: New insights on system, team development, recruiting

QUOTES to which we'll need to refer casual fans, when they're still thinking from a traditional basketball mindset:

"We would like to play 10 to 11."

[on recruiting to her system]
"You have to be a very, very, very special type of player to play this way. And if you're the #3 recruit... that's just an example, or, whatever recruit, Top Ten... maybe you don't fit. Right? Maybe we just don't recruit you. But maybe you're #77 and you're perfect for us. But it has to be a style of play thing.
...you need athletes that can score, that can go downhill and transition, that want to play fast."

[on who-guards-who assignments, when transitioning to defense]
"...we do match up to the closest man."

[on how soon we can expect to see proficiency with this new style of play]
"It takes us a really long time to learn how to play this way. I would say of my nine years of coaching, our November record is probably our worst record, because it takes time."

[on how important it is for the fan base to have patience while the team is learning]
"It's huge. The more media I do, the more I will say it: 'It takes time; it takes time; it takes time.' I don't know what my win/win count is, but I would say a handful of them, at least 15 of the losses, have been in November and December. So it does take time."

I love how quickly she answered "No" when the reporter asked her if she had the "Ah-Ha" moment yet that the team finally has her style of play down. LOL! That is a question only asked by someone who never coached or even played sports before!

At Marshall she was 7 and 5 in her first twelve games and 20 and 2 after.

From personal experience, I can tell you a reporter isn't usually asking questions to get answers for themselves because they don't know the answer, but are often asking questions they know some of their more casual their readers/listeners are sitting around asking themselves. A reporter asks what they believe their audience would like answers to, not themselves. So they'll often ask questions that seem kinda dumb, but they are just trying to paint a full picture by leading the person they're interviewing into saying things they themselves already know, but for the reader who may not know, they ask.

Thanks for that explanation. That certainly makes sense!

Volfan2012, would you mind editing your post?

I think the size needs to be increased to 18 point, and make it all Bold. 👏 Thanks, Volfan2012!

You put into one, short sentence exactly what every Lady Vol fan, spectator, and TV commentator needs to repeat to keep expectations real. Just as in marriage, expectations are relationship-killers.

We can do this right this time.
There aren't many things fans can do to improve their team, but regulating our expectations and directing "Support-mode" energy toward the players during games (rather than "Entitlement-mode" energy), can not only get this train rolling sooner, but make Tennessee even more of a destination for players.

If this team can get young ballers watching and picturing themselves playing Kim Caldwell's Tennessee style of basketball, then more young players will begin developing early the skills and characteristics that it takes to play for the Lady Vols. Coaching clinics might convert some high school coaches to this style, further seeding the recruiting fields.

As Steve Jobs would say, this is how you capture people's imaginations. You show them something new, and surround it with positive energy and encourage creativity.

Sounds like they will run a basketball version of Heupel's offense.
Trying to imagine a football equivalent (because I should be doing something else right now!)...

Imagine all 11 players lining up on the front line to receive the kickoff, and the instant the ref blows his whistle---blitzing the kicker!

I'm thinking the way Kim intends to play just wouldn't be legal in many other sports. We may eventually see the Lady Vols come to be compared with the 2022 BaseVol team, as an aggressive, in-your-face team that other teams hate to face.

Maybe each game's Vol Network "Player of the Game" should receive a fur wristband...

Saw where the Knox Sentinal was at the
First open practice. Sounds encouraging!!!!
Pretty sure I recognized John Adams' voice on at least one question. It was a good question (natch!) and I remember thinking that he was probably impressed (satisfied) with her response. If anyone here gets the Knox Sentinal, look for his reporting on the interview and post some quotes.

The one thing about her November record she was never on the floor with better talent so it will be interesting for this TN Team as she will have the better talent in these November games I expect 0 losses In CHRIST Alone
I imagine we’ll pick up a ding or two or three or four during their acclimation. As long as they are prepared for conference play, I’m good with it. I also think CKC may have been working a little slow play for the masses. Someone apparently has ‘splained to her the LotM.

Fair enough. I went back and checked. We face MTSU in third game but in Knoxville. It stiffens heading into December, with the two TBD in West Palm Beach closer to Christmas.

This team will have a lot more team speed and athleticism than last year. I feel like were gonna crush MTSU.
