I'm not a fan of the point system used today. It takes year long consistency out of the season (which is what I believe makes a true champion). Anyway, I was looking at what it would have looked like had they not changed the rules. I figure some of you might enjoy it.

Just imagine if we had raced under the chase format in 1992, Kyle Petty would have won the championship that year.

I hate the Chase, but I'm not going to discredit Jimmie Johnson's accomplishment's. The Lowe's team just play by the rules they are given.

It is fun to project who would have won, but it could be just conjecture. Jimmie Johnson's team might have raced with a different strategy under the old system and still won.

It's my belief that people wouldn't complain about the Chase so much if we had a different champion every year. People hate it because Johnson has dominated it.

Jeff Gordon has been better than I thought he has.

It baffles me when people say he's fell off. Him and Jimmie Johnson have been the most consistent drivers for a long time running. The chase has really hurt him as far as final rankings go. Three of his worst tracks fall in the chase races.

I think year long cosistency should be the standard. I'm not hurt by the fact JJ has won the past 5. He's been good. I'm hurt by the fact that they don't award the most consistent drivers throughout the year when the points are reset. Just the guys with wins. All the top 10's and top 5's just go out the window. The way they are doing them this year won't change anything. You just wind up with less points.

Too many teams start trying different things once they are comfortably in the chase. They are able to go for wins or try new setups instead of points race. You really can't say this is how it would have been if it was the old format.

Well this new points system doesn't seem to move much at all deep into the season, but I bet ya one DNF in the chase and your done.

It also takes out the team who comes out early and dominates, then falls off somewhat or just coasts. In years past the championship could be won with several races left and that made those races even more boring. Same with NHRA in years past. You could win the title with 5 races left if you did well enough early on. I don't like the current system in either, but it'll have to do until a better system is developed.
I think awarding points for consistency is a great idea in both. Dunno how it could be done though.

I hate the Chase, but I think the current format is the best of all the other tweaks made over the past seven years.

Well it kinnda rewards consistency,,only the top 12 get a chance to win the championship.
