As we loom towards default we need to have another look at the real world outside the back door.
This entire episode has been political theater of the most ridiculous stripe. The very popular (and very needed) social programs in the crosshairs have not caused the debt crisis - not one iota. Even the projections for Medicare could be easily solved, and in fact, the Congress recognizes that Medicare is actually value for money relative to the inefficient private sector.
This is classic "shock doctrine" - the public is shocked into believing we have a long standing "debt crisis" (which is actually two things: 1. Republican mismanagement, and 2. fallout from the housing bubble from Republican and Wall Street mismanagement). Then, they can tear down needed social programs for more Welfare Dad giveaways.
