New Years Eve that year, we travelled to Houston to watch the Vols take on the Purdue Boilermakers in the Bluebonnet Bowl in the Astrodome as the 1980's Arrived....

Unfortunately, steamrolling Notre Dame a week after being beaten by Rutgers is almost as nostalgic as anything else about that clip.

There were 2 car loads of us that drove down and watched that game also. 2 night stay and a return trip. Man what a ride.

Yeah. The Notre Dame win was sandwiched between an inexplicable Homecoming loss to a terrible Rutgers team and a complete 4th quarter collapse that led to a 3 TD loss to a mediocre Ole Miss team in Jackson.

This sequence of games was indicative of the majority of Johnny's tenure at Tennessee. Big upset wins and inexplicable losses to bad teams. Led to a lot of trips to Blue Bonnet, Liberty, and Peach (when it was not a top tier bowl) Bowls........
