Clinton aide accuses Obama of plagiarism - Mike Allen - Politico.com

Howard Wolfson, the Clinton campaign's communications director, today accused Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) of committing “plagiarism” in a speech in Milwaukee on Saturday night.

Wolfson made the explosive charge in an interview with Politico after suggesting as much in a conference call with reporters.
On the call, Wolfson said: “Sen. Obama is running on the strength of his rhetoric and the strength of his promises and, as we have seen in the last couple of days, he’s breaking his promises and his rhetoric isn’t his own.”
"When an author plagiarizes from another author there is damage done to two different parties. One is to the person he plagiarized from. The other is to the reader," said Wolfson.

Obama closely echoed a passage from a speech that Deval Patrick, now the Massachusetts governor, used at a campaign rally when he was running for that office in 2006.

The Clinton campaign circulated a pair of YouTube links of the two speeches on Sunday.

Here's Patrick at a rally for his gubernatorial campaign on Oct. 15, 2006, during the final stretch of his successful campaign against then-Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey (R):

“But her dismissive point, and I hear it a lot from her staff, is that all I have to offer is words — just words. ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, [applause and cheers] that all men are created equal.’ [Sustained applause and cheers.] Just words – just words! ‘We have nothing to fear but fear itself.’ Just words! ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.’ Just words! ‘I have a dream.’ Just words!”

Here’s Obama on Saturday night at the Democratic Party of Wisconsin’s Founders Day Gala in Milwaukee:

Unless she can create a brokered convention, she's toast. She looks like a candidate on life support throwing bombs.

I thought it was funny that his campaign produced video of her using one of his phrases. (I can't remember what it is right now)

Obama needs to consult with Biden if he wants to learn how to really plagarize...

If I remember correctly, I think Hillary used Obama's "Fired up . . . " schtick.

Yep. That's it.

It's funny that they are so similar on policy that all they can complain about is "words vs. actions" and "Washington insider vs. change".

. . . and the Republican field was the one that was supposed to be in disarray all the way to the convention.

he will probably win hawaii and wisconsin tomorrow and depsite hillary having good leads in OH and PA, polls show him within the margin of error in Texas. plus he is favored in states after that like NC with 120 delegates.

its definitely an uphill battle for her.

the debates should be entertaining at least, im curious how she will play it now that she is the one who needs them.

ironic reference? that turned out to be BS afterwards and was spread by the Dukakis campaign during the primary. a similar situation.

He plagiarized in Law School and had to plead not to be dismissed.

In addition to the Kinnock speech he lifted, he liberally took from Kennedy as well.

Good lord, if thats the worst thing a politician ever was accused of, count yourself lucky. I also heard Hillary was upset that Obama wouldn't debate her in Wisconsin. I guess he figure 18 debates was enough. This is going to get ugly, if it hasn't already.

Please ket this carry on til the convention.

Personally, I think this has long term effects. The Clinton machine will never accept defeat, and do anything to regain the power they think they're entitled too. In the end, they want care about the DNC, they'll rip into to get what they want. They are already trying to get Mich and Fla delegates seated, and Hillary has to sweep Ohio, Texas, and Pa. to have a chance. Lose a couple, and lets see if she bows out gracefully, or if she starts cutting throats.

I'll agree with that. She has to sweep Ohio, Texas and Pa. or she might as well hang it up. IMO

Hillary is no where near losing, she's less than 100 delegates behind and if I heard this correctly, there's no way either she or Obama can win enough delegates outright to secure the nomination.

The super delegates are going to decide this, and the democrats are going to have to shut up about it if they vote for Hillary otherwise they'll look like hypocrites after all their hand wringing after 2000 and 2004.

Some one needs to tell the Hillary researchers about this one...From Obama's speech in Texas: 'Houston, I think we achieved liftoff here.'
now, I'm confident that line was stolen from somewhere...:p

That's true, but I don't believe that the Super Delegates have the cojones to override the sentiment of a majority of any significance if one exists by convention time. If you think McCain is having trouble with conservatives, let Hillary make a power play with super delegates and then try to convince Obama backers, much less black Obama supporters, to show up on election day.

As for the original post...this is a little crazy. Do they have the same speech writer? I'm fairly familiar with Deval Patrick's campaign here in Massachusetts. I don't recall this speech, but I'm familiar with the politics that caused him to give it. Obama's speech was practically a copy in this section...I find it pretty wild, really. I think things like this should be pointed out....because Obama does gain his strength from his words...and if he's taking those words from other campaigns, it is a little weird.

If Obama keeps winning each state with an 11-17% cushion, he will secure the nomination. With the way he clobbered her in Wisconsin (blue-collar workers), he's got a very good chance at taking two of the next big three (Ohio and Pennsylvania). Teamsters Union siding with Obama also didn't help her cause.

he clobbered her in the popular vote in WI, but only received 10 more delegates (42 vs 32).

as of today, the total delegate are:
Obama: 1319
Clinton: 1250

Oh, I realize that. However, if he keeps winning by double digits (especially states like Ohio and Pennsylvania), there's no way the super delegates will go against the grain if he can't cross the finish line prior to Denver.

If Obama wins Texas it's over for other reasons. First, Clinton's donations will dry up when people realize they are wasting it on her and second, the super delegates will not go through the backlash of going against the pledged delegates.
