I think that closing practice to the media has hurt this team.
If the media could report the problems seen in practice then it would make the coaches more accountable. Dropped balls, fumbles, penalties etc would be reported by the media. Thus letting fans know what to truly expect from this team.
I've heard reports from people inside the program say that the team doesn't look good in practice. That would explain the poor play on the field. By not allowing media more than 30 mins. in practice, the coaches avoid accountability. Just a thought.

Most coaches close practice now, but Pete Carrol opens practice to one and all, and plays catch with anybody when practice is over.

IMO the closed practice has really hurt the coaching staff, and is a knock on their credibility. It certainly has an air of avoiding accountability.

This is a public university, and practice should be open.

Before this season in fall practice, if the media had reported the same problems in practice that we've seen this year then us as fans might have realized that this team had major problems, curtailing the high expectations.

I don't think Fulmer wants anyone to know what offensive plays we're going to run.

It would leak to the ND coaching staff, and they could get an upper hand. :D

everyone already knows what we are gonna run. we do the same sh*t every game.

and as far as Carrol goes, he is a great players coach, and they love him and will do what he says. Fulmer does not do that. he is to business like.. and to me that hurts him in this day and age.

Fulmer was also seen as a players coach when he took over. Time will tell if PC keeps the same persona.

The media gets enough access, i for one dont mind the closed practice rule. Yes, the coaches must be accountable for what goes on during that time, not another lame reporter telling us what he/she believes is going wrong on a daily basis.

Agreed, most of those reporters are just little wessels, wantabees who could not play the game. There primary job is to sell media crap. I call them " Spin Doctors". Remember, they are the ones who hyped Tennessee in the press prior to the season. They got the Vol nation talking, that's there job. They baited Fulmer into giving them that Championship magic dust, and now we are all dissapointed about the season, so don't read to much of what they write. Closing practice is a good idea, I have attended practice before and there are to many distractions with guest being there. I like it better when we fly under the radar screen and sneak up on our visitors. However, thats hard to do in todays world. Also for those who like the open practice idea, would you like a crowd of people you don't know to show up at your office and hang out around your desk while your trying to work.

Everything that I heard and read from KNS and Tenn reporters before the season was pretty low key.

Mike Strange was on the radio in Lex and said the Vols would have a 3 loss season and wouldn't win the conference because of their schedule.

So with CPF talking Rose Bowl, and turning around and having a terrible season, I say he has made his bed and made RS lay in it.

Fact is if reporters had access to practice maybe the volnation would have seen this coming.

I think you can keep the media out of practice. The coaches have enough "accountability" to deal with from the play on the field. There is plenty of media coverage of that.

"I don't think Fulmer wants anyone to know what offensive plays we're going to run"

The whole SEC knows what we're gonna run--that's one of the problems.

Run over the tackles, run up the middle, cheezy screen pass and punt.

Did anyone see the ESPN 30 minute special on UT's pre-season practice? I wasn't that thrilled with what little I saw on offense. We had miscommunication and bobbled balls then. Now looking back this was only a snapshot of what the season would be like.....

I still say they need to make the players NOT talk to the media. Clausen's running his mouth not making the situation any better. Instead of whining he should be focused on studying up on Notre Dame.....after all according to him this is all his fault. If he spent as much time practicing and studying up as he did crying in front of the cameras perhaps he'd be a Heisman candidate this year....but who am I kidding?

Umm...baring the Bama game over 60% of our plays have been passes. And if we would have stayed with the run against SC then we would have won IMO.

Thats kind of a ridiculous statement. Philip Fulmer is 100% players coach. That is "the" thing that has brought him as much success as he has had. Is he an X's and O's guy? No, he is a coach will defend and backup his players until the very end.
