If our offense plays similar to what they did against Cal all year long, Do you think Coach Cut will be our offensive Coordinator next year?
I think if we play this good all year he has a really good chance to become a head coach again.

He should get another chance at a head job, but the thing working against Cutcliffe is his health history. You have to wonder if anybody would take a chance with him and whether he wants the stress.

I think that's why he only signed a two-year deal.

I think he will work out the two seasons unless "the perfect job" comes open after this season.

What "the perfect job" is to him, I'm not sure.

I don't see him leaving for UK or Vandy so I'm not sure what his thinking is gonna be on that.

I do know he has said that he wouldn't have been able to step "down" to a coordinator job at any place other than Tennessee, with Phil. He has also talked about how hard being a head coach was, and how he doesn't think he was as ready as he thought he was when he left Tennessee the first time.

It's my gut feeling that he won't go anywhere else, but ofcourse if the right thing comes along, that could change.

Yeah..but there is no doubt that the man really wanted a head coaching position after leaving Ole Miss. That's the point that he is in his career....I think he is buying time and hopefully a few championships in Knoxville right now.

When he said to me that he underestimated what it was to be a College Head Coach, and that he thought that because he was "some hotshot bigtime coordinator, that he was ready", I REALLY got the feeling that he wasn't real interested in getting back into it, unless it was a few select jobs.

Well...he was certainly burned pretty badly by Ole Miss. They handled the situation horribly. I just thought that I remembered him making some comments about head coaching positions after he left. Regardless, he's a great coordinator and I hope he stays for a while. Me loves the trifecta!!

I think the fact he took a QB coach job at Notre Dame speaks alot for his desire to not just get back into head coaching at the first place that calls. He was going to be content being there a few years until something might have opened up. I think he is doing the same thing here, by not signing a longterm contract, but at the same time, that he would stay here much longer than he would have at Notre Dame, or anywhere else.

Again, all of this is just my gut feeling after talking with him very little, so it's not like I know what he's planning.

A truly big factor being left out is his wife, though that's part of the health deal... Mama Cutcliffe has had a huge say- more or less veto power- over what jobs he can take ever since his health crisis.

Unless Cut pulls off some major attitude & lifestyle adjustments ala Mike Ditka after he almost checked out, and has an even larger health turnaround, I'm not sure he'll ever take a head-coaching job again at a major level- she won't allow him, and he's even more fond of her than football.

Considering how much they like East TN, and how much support they've got in the area, and unless he makes those turnarounds, I'd expect him to semi-retire- stay on as a UT consultant, and maybe lobby for something like the HC job at Maryville, or UT Chattanooga

Everyone is ignoring the economics involved:

250k/yr as a coordinator
800k+/yr as a head coach

Thats a big incentive to be a head coach.

My expectation is Cutcliffe leaves to take another head coaching job, like Kentucky, Mississippie State, etc in a couple of years if UT continues to play well the rest of this year and next.

Money is a big factor... But I do not see him leaving for a Lower level team. If its not a big time team that he can win with quick I dont see him leaving.

What top program do you think would hand him their head coaching job though. I love the guy, but let's remember, we're talking about a guy who got fired at Ole Miss and is a heart attack victim. I doubt Miami or Michigan will be calling.

No doubt about it, the health thing is a big deal.

I hope we hang on to him for a while. The Cutcliffe/Chavis coaching duo is a great thing for Tennessee football.
