Coach Cutcliffe Gets A Two Year Extension At Duke

David Cutcliff lifted Duke football to new heights his first 10 years. I’m sure Tennessee would have been better off had Cut been here instead of Kiffin, Dooley and Butch.
Coach Cut has done a brilliant job at Duke and Ole Miss was very stupid in firing him. Coach Cut never would have come to Tennessee because he was pissed off that Hamilton fired his friend Phil Fulmer.

Health permitting, (that tricky ticker) he coaches as long as they let him. My guess he goes strong til 75...then he reevaluates. Dude’s a COACH. What else he missing out on?

Tennessee would be in good shape now if Coach Cut would have been Tennessee head coach in 2009 instead of Lame Kiffin:rolleyes: It's too bad that idiot Hamilton pissed him off the way he did:(

He was all set to come here but they wouldn't let his assistant coaches come with him!

This is false. At least the part about him never coming to Tennessee.
IT WAS DONE. Done so much a few friends of mine on staff were already packing up there apartments in boxes because Matt Luke and Roper told them to . Everyone on staff was excited to get back to Knoxville. Except it wasn’t done... because of one detail that was mostly caused by Mike Hamilton’s incompetence, and indirectly caused by one of the great modern coaches of our time.... Anybody want to take some guesses who it is I am referring to?

You guys are smart. You’ll figure it out. Shouldn’t take long....✌🏻😏

Edit: The answer and end result will just piss you off. No way it doesn’t .

Honestly and Seriously, I do not know that one. Was Fulmer somehow involved in this? Did he tell Cut not to come?

Fulmer wanted Cut to take the job. Cut loves the University of Tennessee and just about every part of East Tennessee and so does his wife . Their plan is to retire there after Cut is done coaching. That may change now because of all the grandkids.

Cut was a done deal like I said. Coaches were calling wives, girlfriends, etc during a work day telling them to get things in order bc they were going back to Knoxville. People were leaving work early and it was a forgone conclusion. Except it wasn’t

The snag was Kippy Brown. Mike Hamilton gave him such a BS interview to be made full time coach that it was insulting to him. So now Brown is pissed. Hamilton knows the optics will look bad so he tells Cut the job is his but.... Kippy Brown has to be the WR coach. That’s it . He’s on staff no matter what, trying to save his own ass. Cut says he is bringing his entire staff or no one at all. In particular, former Duke player Scottie Montgomery because he believes he is a good young coach with high potential. Cut keeps fighting back because as well know Cut always makes the hiring and firing decisions when he’s head coach. Nobody budges after hours of communication and ultimately the deal falls through.

In the meantime, the guy who started this whole butterfly effect, Pete Carroll is silently courting Kippy to the Seahawks because he knows he’s pissed and available thanks to a certain former coach. Also at the time, Mike Tomlin comes calling for Scottie Montgomery to coach WR/QB’s for the Steelers.

So Pete Carroll goes to Seattle from USC, Kiffin leaves us for USC , Kippy is disgruntled and goes to Seattle gets his Super Bowl ring, Cut stays at Duke and completely turns Duke around into a respectable program, reaching heights it never has seen in modern era and Montgomery goes to the Steelers. We get a coach from Louisiana Tech who has a less than .500 win % and are still in recovery mode a decade later from all of this because of the arguing over position coach.
Most Tennessee **** of all time.

That, that is messed up!!! So Hamilton told Brown during the interview he was going to get the HC job or that Brown felt he just BS'ed him to the level of insults?

It is my understanding that the meeting was nothing more than a courtesy interview so Hamilton could say he interviewed Kippy Brown and he was never offered the position.

Hell, even though Hamilton screwed the pooch, the program would have been a lot better off long-term if he had just hired Kippy as interim for the 2010 season. The timing of Kiffin's exit put us in such a compromised position as far as a head coaching search. If he didn't panic, he would've had all year to conduct a search, although he probably still would have found a way to screw it up.

Hamilton and Joe Alleva have to be the worst ADs at a major college program of the last 50 years. Their managerial and administrative incompetence knew no bounds.

Better...currently. Limited upside on recruiting.
I agree. I'd love to go back and see an alternate history with Cut at the helm starting in 2010. You know he would have been able to recruit and develop a QB. I think he would have needed a lot of help recruiting beyond that though.

Tennessee would have been better during 2010-2014, but y’all would have been frustrated as hell. It would have been a lot of seasons like 2015/2016. 8/9 wins, can never get over the hump.

Cut is a good coach but he’s at a perfect spot for him.

He is where he needs to be. Duke is a perfect fit for him.

He would never see success at a school with expectations.

I mean Lucas Taylor was 1,000 yard receiver in ‘07 let me say that again...Lucas Taylor was 1000 yard receiver!!!! and we dinked and dunked, hi- lowed and slanted all season and got to Atlanta. If Cut had gotten ahold of Bray and Justin Hunter that would’ve been something pretty great...I’m wondering if he would've kept the same base D philosophy of 4-2-5 like Duke runs or probably try to bring back Chavis as D coordinator.

In the end it all worked out for the best. There will be a statue of him outside of Wallace Wade someday and he can always comeback to UT and be universally admired . Not to mention, most importantly have his health not going through the SEC pressure cooker.

Hamilton is apparently a very nice man who does a lot of good things . Being the director of athletics at UT is not one of them. Alleva is a little slicker and more cutout for the job. I would say I’m very well “in the know” when it comes to the Alleva’s. He’s done quite a few good things and also had some real head scratching moments during his time at Duke and LSU.

I think it's very possible that Coach Cut retires at the end of the season because I think Duke will be rebuilding in 2019 and will finish 3-9.
Instant prediction: You’ll be reissuing your prediction for the next decade.

I think you are severely overestimating Hamilton here.
