John Majors lost 4 SEC games in a row twice in his career as head coach at UT, in his first year in 1977, after the program had hit rock bottom under Bill Battle, and in 1988, when he fired some coaches in mid-season and went 5-6, the same record as Fulmer had in 2005. The following year, Majors bounced back to win 2 SEC Championships in a row, and won the Cotton Bowl and Sugar Bowl in consecutive years with his revamped staff, in addition to achieving Top 10 national rankings both seasons in 1989 and 1990.

Does anyone remember who was let go and who the new coaches were?

I know Ken Donahue was fired and Doug Matthews moved from the offensive side over to be Defensive Coordinator.

Isn't Donahue the defensive coach that master-minded the gameplan that stopped the "U" in the sugar bowl against UT?

Yep . . . He basically junked up the whole defense and just threw everything but the kitchen sink at Vinny Testaverde. I think Vinny got sacked something like 7 times.

I don't see too much talk about that game on this board for one reason or another.:)

A brilliant defensive gameplan. The funny thing is, Jerry Sandusky at Penn State did the exact opposite thing the next year in the Fiesta Bowl. The Lions dropped 8 into coverage most of the night, picked off 3 or 4 passes, and upset the 'Canes for the National Championship.
