just thought i would relay a few interesting quotes and notes from todays luncheon:

1. "I think the biggest thing that we have to do a good job of - I think we are progressing in a lot of areas - but our biggest concern as a staff is turnovers. I think we had 13, 14 and 15 in the last three games. We watched film on it again this morning as a team and staff. They are really unforced turnovers. So that's one area we have to get better at, taking care of the ball more than anything. We're putting ourselves in great positions to win games but we have costly turnovers in tough situations. So that's an area we have to get better in."

2. "I think the biggest plus for us as a staff right now is our team defense. We're finally starting to get to where we need to be in order to be a successful program, to be one of the better defensive teams in the country. One of our goals heading into the season was to hold teams under 40 percent from the field. We had 40.6, I think, in league play. Holding them under 30 percent from 3-point range and I think we're at 31 or 32 percent. Points: 60 or less in league play and I think we're at 61. So, we're making the necessary progress against three really good opponents. Now it's being consistent with that and keep putting forth that work ethic and getting into that mindset where we're trying to get stops every time down. I don't know if we have that mindset right now. I think we're a better defensive team, but we have to get that mindset where we hate for teams to score baskets against us. Once we get that mindset then we'll be making another step."
3. On whether Jarnell Stokes' minutes will increase
"I think so--as long as he's in good shape and understands what is expected on the defensive side of the ball, more than anything. With him, Jeronne, Kenny and those guys, you have guys you can throw the ball inside to and make plays. So you can be safe offensively if you don't know a lot of plays. But from a defensive standpoint it's hedging ball screens, rotating, switching different ball screens, helping recover--those are all different things he has to make adjustments to."

4. On offensive energy and production
"We have to be a great defensive team in order to get where we are trying to go. We tried the 90 points and came up short. I think for us, we have to be a tremendous defensive team, and that's the way it will be as long as I'm a part of this program. On offense, you have to make shots, you work on your game and you get it inside and score the ball. You look at Kentucky. When you get into league play, if you're a good team and you execute what you're trying to do, you're not scoring a lot of baskets just coming down the floor into your offense. If you're a good team on both ends of the floor in league play, it comes down to grinding it out and getting stops and that's what Kentucky did to win the ballgame. Their individuals made plays. That's what it came down to. You have to be able to defend at a high level if you want to be one of the last teams standing.

5. On better defense in league play
"I think the lineup change had something to do with it. In order for us to be a champion, we have to defend. I think in Josh's case, he's a defender by nature. He's a guy who will be a good scorer but he's a defender more than anything. I think Renaldo just brings a different level of energy. But we haven't changed anything defensively. We're just doing the things we talk about, and I've said it before, I never thought defending could be that hard. It's just taking pride in shutting your guy down."

6. Coach Martin also did confirm that woolridge will slide to the 3 to get some minutes there. he said that against smaller teams it may be harder for him to do, but that they will ease him into it and getting used to chasing guys around again as a sf.

love the stress that he puts on the defense and requires you to play in order to see the floor. this defensive passion is going to pay huge dividends in the ncaa tourney in the future.

The defense is really starting to come around, although at this point, it feels like we're building for next season. I'm okay with that, as our early season losses are difficult to overcome. Stoked for the future

thank God we have a coach that stresses and praises defense. I hope our team eats, sleeps, and dreams of defense.

Stokes will be a full time starter very soon. I think his work ethic is going to surpass the other #5 we so desperately loved. If he's getting up that early every morning to get shots in and watches game tape as much as they say, then thats impressive and he'll learn what we do quickly

i love the comment..."i never thought playing defense could be that hard. it is just taking pride in shutting your guy down." that says a lot right there about how he is going to expect his players to play as well, this is why he loves josh richardson.

i follow stokes on twitter(call me a stalker), and this kid is in the gym non stop it is insane. i thought tobias had a great work ethic as far as being in the gym alot, this guy makes tobias look lazy. if he isnt in the gym he is wanting to watch film, or look at plays, everything with this guy is about basketball.

In the first month of the season, I ripped this team for playing what I considered to be bad defense. There were several who disagreed with me tooth and nail (ZJC imparticular). Perhaps, now you understand what I was driving at then. We seem to understand help defense now. We understand how to hedge out on the pick. We understand how to retreat back to our man after helping.

It appears that Martin was seeing the same things myself and a few others were seeing. A very good defensive team should consistently hold opponents to 40% or less from the field. That is always my benchmark for FG% defense. You always give yourself a chance to win by being that effective defensively.

This is exactly why you will rarely see us just get blown out in games. If you play great defense like ccm expects then you will have a chance in every game. We have seen it the last few games uf we beat, uk and Msu we were right there with. Hopefully with the continued improvement of the defense we can beat some teams we shouldn't beat in the near future.

Hope you and some others are learning a little patience (not that you were the one calling for his head) when it comes to new coaches teaching young inexperienced players fundamentals.
Hey. even the 5* needs some learnin.

All these people that got on here after losses to teams like coc of peay and make the claim that he isn't they guy. Give this guy a chance I think he has all the tools to be a great coach and have success here at Tennessee. Patience is key though.

Hey. even the 5* needs some learnin.

My patience has and will be persistent in any coaches' first season with the coach himself. It's silly to say after 8 or 9 games that a coach will be a flop or a hall of famer, and, like you said, I certainly wasn't in that vocal minority. My frustration began to grow over his lack of adjustments, particularly in defensive scheme and the lineups he was using (I called for benching Hall and splitting Tatum and McRae long before it happened). He has since addressed the lineup. His scheme seems to have become less problematic in accordance with the lineup change. It appears to have motivated certain individuals to step up their defense, and those that haven't, have seen there playing time diminish.

I think it was like the old saying actions speak louder than words. I believe ccm wanted to give everyone their fair chance to keep their starting spot, and probably told them multiple times you have to pick it up. Once they realized he wasn't playing and benched them(something their previous coach wouldn't) they realize they better start listening to him and pick it up on defense if they wanted to see the floor. (I'm mainly referring to McRae and hall)
