Secretly wishes he was in the SEC.

Meh...if you mean that Stoops wishes he coached an SEC team, he has had that opportunity multiple times with some of our best programs. He was definitely offered the Florida job when Spurrier stepped down in 2002 and the LSU job when Saban left for Miami in 2004...It was rumored that he was also offered the Alabama job in 2003 after Dennis Franchione left for Texas A&M and they hired Mike Shula. If you mean that he wishes Oklahoma was in the SEC, I tend to doubt that too. Although if Texas jumped, OU would want to come as well no doubt. He simply believes that the sports media (specifically ESPN) dwells on the SEC's dominance too much and like most coaches doesn't like that the SEC got the benefit of the doubt so much when deciding who would play for the BCS title (specifically LSU getting in the BCSCG in '07 with two losses, Florida getting in over Michigan in '06 and Alabama getting a nod over Oklahoma St in '11 even though they didn't win their conference or division). Stoops resents the SEC for many reasons and is particularly sensitive to the assumption that an SEC schedule is automatically more difficult than a Big 12 schedule. I'm sure his two BCSCG losses to SEC teams (LSU for the '03 and Florida for the '08 championships) has a role in his resentment, as well as some of the recruiting battles he has lost against the SEC. He probably sees Texas A&M as more of a threat on the recruiting trail now that they are in the SEC too... and doesn't like that either.

Why would he wish that, he would have to play the best in the nation on a regular basis. He now can play a rather weak schedule in a weak conference and be considered the powerhouse of the conference. In the SEC he would be in a conference of powerhouses.

Exactly. He wants SEC level respect without playing an SEC level schedule.

I sure do remember a lot of people around here wanting him to coach UT instead of Butch during the last search

You are absolutely correct. Many of those who wanted Stoops to be our coach, are typing away this week about what a horrible coach he is. It's always a case of "what have you done for me lately." I think he is a very good coach and I sure did love watching Bama get beat down in the Sugar Bowl last year and I also loved watching Boise St beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta years ago. Statue of Liberty play was a classic.

So you're saying he's jealous of his little brother coaching in the SEC?

Stoops is a classy coach, and I have nothing but respect for the OU program. I would have liked if had came to UT during the last two coaching searches, but I think we ended up with an excellent coach in Butch Jones, and I love what he's doing with our program. Deep down, Stoops knows the SEC is the premier conference in the nation, but he obviously cannot say that and must defend his university and conference for obvious reasons. I don't think he will purposely run up the score with a quick return to Knoxville next season. He's smart, and I think he does realize our young football team is only going to get better with experience and he doesn't want to give our team any added motivation for next seasons game in Neyland. Maybe I'm wrong and he wants to try and send a message to the SEC with trying to run it up if he gets the chance, but I think his animosity with our conference has more to do with Saban and Bama than it does a mid tier SEC team like us at this point.

This is a really good post and I agree with a lot of points that you bring up.

I don't think Stoops' primary problem is with Saban/Bama or even the SEC as a whole. I think he gets tired of the MEDIA trumpeting how great the SEC is and he feels there is some "built in bias" regarding the perception of that conference.....all the while, the Big 12 and other conferences have to take a backseat to the SEC propaganda that is sometimes overly purported by ESPN and other sports outlets.

There is no doubt that the SEC is the best conference and has been for a while. But I believe Stoops' (and others) argument is that the "gap" isn't nearly as broad as sometimes perceived.

If you are going to kiss his butt this much let's also acknowledge that he has always been eager to take in players who were kicked out of other programs...Anybody remember our own DT Lynn McGruder from 2000? Not to mention DGB from Mizzou most recently. Oklahoma is very Auburn-esque with their open door to players who ran afoul of the law in other places. He is a great coach but no different than any other with what he is willing to accept in order to win.

Saying Schtoops is an underachiever is not trashing the coach. He has had amazing talent and winning records but his teams seem to lose 1-2 games every year that they shouldn't have.
