SUX
!!
I dont care who you "root" for.
In my 76 years I have watched a lot of Football on all levels.
Thru the wunder of 9200 Channels, I can sit here on my fat arse and switch channels I consume a lot of football.

At the end of the day, play calling by SO Many is a dying art. Head Coaches or OCs continue to out think themselves and sux !!!
The NFL isnt much better. It at times is right down laughable.

That card wrapped in plexiglass they are grasping on the sidelines needs to be **** canned!!

In my day the QBs like Starr and Unitas called their own plays and we liked it!

Get this man some hot oatmeal and a water bottle for his back. And for God's Sake don't tell him about the time change tonight......

OP is mostly correct. The lack of common sense from a lot of head coaches when it comes to game management and decision making is astonishing. Just today, Florida should have lost in regulation because they decided to substitute in the waning seconds instead of just spiking the ball. Luckily for them they got bailed out by the refs. Greg Schiano makes a boneheaded decision late in the first half to burn his final timeout instead of spiking the ball. That decision hurt his teams chances of scoring a touchdown before the half and they had to settle for a field goal. Then Chris Kleinmann inexplicably decides to go for it in overtime on fourth and goal from the four. Not only was the play call horrific, but the decision to go for it when the Texas offense had been struggling for most of the second half was mind boggling.

Those examples are just from the noon window today. It’s really hard to believe that guys who are being paid millions of dollars and have spent the lives coaching the game of football can’t seem to grasp the basics of game management.

None of those coaches are at elite programs, really.

It's a testament to how "dot-com-esque" the college game is that these guys are millionaires. They aren't worth it, but here we are and good for them for getting paid for being mediocre. I'd do it.

Like dot-com, it's not at all sustainable. Between ridiculously inflated coach's salaries and NIL millionaires who've never seen a college snap, this is all going to deflate and crash.

But we, and I mean me, continue to feed the beast with our eyeballs glued to the TV on Saturday to watch useless coaches do feckless things and they keep getting paid.

I don't blame the schools. I blame me.

I think the difference is that players listened to the coaches more back in the day. Players don't listen as well today. I think coaching is there, the teams just don't listen or follow it on the field. I tend to hear discussion about this being an issue.

NFL is like that. I rarely see great coaching in NFL. Every team seems to be clones of each other with how they play offense and defense. It is really just down to the players.

The big difference is back in the day,
People that never coached a game in their life or even played it didn’t think they were experts and knew more than the professionals that get paid to make the calls

I don’t know what coaches making horrible clock management decisions has to do with players listening. Did you watch the end of regulation of the UF Arky game today? Some of the worst coaching on both sides I have ever seen.

I think its a factor of multiple things.

First the coaches have to justify their huge pay checks by being the smartest guy in the room. "back in the day" play calling was veer left or right, or the good ole straight up the middle for 3 yards, not a lot of "genius" to be had there. Spurrier was considered an offensive genius, but now his offense would be considered very outdated and simple. more is expected of the coaches than was previously.

secondly, I don't have any stats to back this up, but coaches seem to be trending younger and younger. so they don't build up as much experience, where they can learn on the job and figure out what works and what doesn't.

third, its a problem of awareness. how much would coaching have changed with things like instant replay, or heck just replays. back in the day if you didn't catch it live, you, the fan, probably never would know unless it cost a game. now we can dissect games by the second to question each call. the media does this as well. every game being televised means you actually get to see the boneheaded calls by the coaches live. 20/30 years ago that wasn't really the case. you have multiple 24/7 sports news options, and they have to find material, plus who knows how many guys on the internet breaking things down. Even what Freak does with this forum, posting the game a couple hours later without the the TV timeouts was far beyond anyone but the schools involved not long ago.
